Jalandhar: Finale of four-day Association of Indian Universities' North Zone Inter-university Basketball (Women) Tournament -2013, held at Lovely Professional University, declared Kurukshetra University as Zonal Champion. From the other league matches played on the last day of the tournament, GNDU Amritsar remained satisfied as runner up, and Panjabi University Patiala as second runner up. Now, along with 4thposition holder Punjab University Chandigarh, all the winners of 4 Pools will further compete in National Inter University Basketball (Women) Tournament- 2013 to be held at Dr NTR University Vijaywada from 21st November, 2013 onwards.
After winning in their respective Pool Matches, Kurukshetra University, GNDU Amritsar, Panjabi University Patiala, and Punjab University Chandigarh had entered the league matches. From their respective three league matches Kurukshetra University lifted the Zonal Tournament trophy by gathering 6 points; Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar had 4 points by winning 2 matches; Punjabi University Patiala won only one match and got 2 points; whereas, Punjab University Chandigarh did not win any of the league matches.
Congratulating the Champions and encouraging other participating teams LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal asked all players to improve upon their present performances for better tomorrow: “Best student-players from such competitions should further practice hard and eye on Olympic Games and other world level competitions from now only. They should best utilize their youthful energy.” Mr Mittal also thanked AIU for reposing faith in LPU’s organizing potentiality and simultaneously felicitated Division of Sports of the University.
Sharing his experiences, Manager of the tournament winning team Rajesh Sobti said: “It was great to see my team lifting winners-trophy, and it was equally great to stay at vast campus of host LPU- one of the best organising universities so far. In fact all other players, coaches and managers too have high words of appreciation for present host-ship.” Talking about his team, he shared that the victory of his team was mainly due to the inclusion of players of caliber, Indu Bala and Divya Pandey, who are Junior India Basketball Campers.”
Illustrative, LPU was designated as the organizing body of the North Zone inter-university basketball (women) championship 2013 by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi. As many as 33 teams from different states of the zone had consented to participate in the event. Internationally reputed basketball player Olympian Dr Tarlok Singh Sandhu supervised the whole event as an esteemed AIU’s observer.
Results of six League Matches: Kurukshetra University defeated GNDU Amritsar by 86-61; Panjabi University, Patiala defeated Punjab University, Chandigarh by 80-64; Kurukshetra University defeated Punjab University, Chandigarh by59-46; GNDU, Amritsar defeated Panjabi University, Patiala by 86-48; Kurukshetra University defeated Panjabi University, Patiala by 61-41; whereas, GNDU, Amritsar defeated Punjab University, Chandigarh by 67-53.
