Jalandhar: A few days back, Chief Minister (Punjab) Sardar Parkash Singh Badal had himself visited Tihar Jail (New Delhi) to explore the possibility of a bakery unit in Punjab central Jail. To put in place this pet project of CM S Badal towards reformation and rehabilitation of the prisoners, Punjab Government had engaged Lovely Professional University to provide training to the inmates. Professors from Department of Hotel Management of the University visited the Bakery unit established at Central Jail in Ludhiana daily to train inmates as skillful ‘Bakers’. Principal Secretary Home Affairs and Justice Dhanbir Singh Bains had himself inspected the trial run of the bakery unit. Now, the prisoners turned skillful bakers have started producing Biscuits, Breads, Buns, Rusk & allied products as brand “Anand”.
On the initiation of this great learning program, Additional Director-General of Police (ADGP Prisons) RP Meena has already indicated: “Initially, the bakery products would be used in state jails. As the production increases, the Department of Jails would make arrangements for further sale.” In fact, aiming to impart skills to prisoners in productive activities so that they get reintegrated into the society, Punjab Government has reshaped Tihar Jail’s model in state prisons.
Feeling happy on sharing the responsibility with Punjab government, LPU Chancellor Mr. Ashok Mittal said: “I am very happy to note that CM Punjab entrusted this task in Punjab to our school of Hospitality. Our teachers have let the inmates become well-trained for the desired results.” Continuing Mr. Mittal said: “In fact, when the prisoners come out, society is not seen ready to accept them. They do not find any jobs, or any other source of livelihood. However, this training is indeed going to help them to get settled once again with respect. Such training has proved successful in Tihar Jail, and Badal Sahib’s project in Punjab will also prove fruitful by redefining a prisoner’s life.”
Illustrative, as per the Punjab Government, the Jail- Bakery Factory is set up with an objective to engage inmates in productive work. Over the period of time, there will be manifold growth in the scope and activities of such a Jail Factory.
