Phagwara: Following the Union Cabinet’s decision to observe January 25, the day the Election Commission of India was set up in 1950, as the National Voters' Day, Punjab Election Commission organized state level National Voters' Day at LPU Campus under the aegis of Election Commission of India. District Kapurthala hosted the organization to enlighten and awaken the young voters of the state. Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, Ms Kusumjit Sidhu was the Chief Guest, who inaugurated the event by lighting of the lamp. She was accompanied by IG Police Jalandhar Range Ms Gurpreet Deo, DC Kapurthala Ms Alaknanda Dayal, Chairman Lovely Group Mr Ramesh Mittal & LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal. During Badge ceremony, badges with slogan "Proud to be a voter - Ready to Vote" were distributed to all. After this, CEO Ms Sidhu let all take an oath to utilize their voting rights fearlessly and responsibly.
Addressing the young voters, the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer, Ms Kusumjit Sidhu said: “The Election Commission of India has always been as transparent as possible, and has been urging each and every state to awaken the voters, particularly new and young voters. In this context, a large number of voters' education activities have been taken up in the state to popularize electoral participation. This observance of National Voters' Day is mainly to inspire new & young voters to utilize their voting rights.” Ms Sidhu also informed: “The commission also launched a campaign to reach out to the newly eligible (18+) electors and to register them in the revision of electoral rolls. As a result many of youth in the 18-19 age group have been enrolled and the number of voters in Punjab has gone up much in comparison to electors in the corresponding period last year." Appealing to all LPU students, whether from Punjab or any other state and who do not have voting rights, she asked them to make an immediate access to the nodal officer deputed for the campus to have their Voter Identity Cards: “Each and every one of you is important and make use of this opportunity. You all matter much to the country. No doubt at this age you think of your career first, but the anger among you against some social ills can be converted into positive action by electing great people of your choice. So I appeal to all to become voter and go certainly to cast your vote in the very next election.” At this, hundreds of LPU students promised to get their voter Identity cards made soon from the concerned authority:
“Thanking the CEO Ms Sidhu for choosing LPU Campus as the fit dais for such an important event, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal expressed his immense happiness on the 63rd anniversary of Election Commission of India. Having a broad comparison with the democracies of countries like UK and US, he let all aware that the Indian Democracy is the largest in the world, where each and every Indian citizen has equal right to vote since the inception of ECI, in 1950. Mr Mittal said: “All citizens of India are making India a great democratic nation, as entire power is in the hands of Indian voters. Indian election system is much powerful, which without much of the regular staff members on roll has been able to conduct such mammoth activity year after year across the nation. The system of ECI is, undoubtedly, marvellous, practical and independent.” Mr Mittal also implored to all the young voters at LPU: “Students should get their voting rights so that they may take part in each and every election to make Indian democracy a grand success.”
Prior to this, DC Ms Dayal highlighted the importance of the event while welcoming the chief guest and other invitees. Electors photo identity cards (EPIC) were distributed to 5 newly eligible voters and awards were also bestowed upon officials for best electoral practices. A skit to motivate youth to understand the value of democracy and their voting right was also presented by students of Kamala Nehru Public School Phagwara.
