Jalandhar: The 31st Junior National Softball (Boys/Girls) Championship 2013 inaugurated today at Lovely Professional University (LPU). Punjab Softball Association (PSA) is organising the championship, which is being hosted by LPU up to 8th June 2013, for six days. A total of 45 State teams (24 boys and 21 girls) are competing in the grand championship termed as “Summer Blast” Softball Championship’13. In all 70 matches will be played by 525 players under the care of 105 coaches & managers, whereas 27 officials will observe for decisions. The chief guest of the inauguration ceremony was President of Softball Association of India, Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi. The valedictory ceremony shall be held on June 8, 2013 with distribution of Medals, Certificates, prizes and Winning Trophy. Teams from 22 states, 2 union territories (Tamil-Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh etc) and organization of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) will compete to lift the coveted trophy.
Thanking host LPU for arrangements made for the championship, Secretary Softball Association Punjab, Mr Pran Nath Passi, said, "We are happy to see the promotion of Soft-Ball through the largest university of India. The way the arrangements are made and the co-operation we are getting from each and every staff member of the University is highly commendable. This will indeed help us a lot in producing national and international-level players from each and every state. After league matches teams will be playing for pre-quarter final, super league, loser finals, semi- final and final.
Welcoming the young sports men-women to LPU Campus, Director General of LPU Mr HR Singla said: “We are happy to host such a big national event. We know it is a great responsibility to fulfill. However, LPU is always ready to strive to help bring out the best from an individual student whether it being academic, extra-curricular, cultural or sports activity. Prior to this, University has also hosted state and national championships for Body Building, Boxing, Football and other fields.”
Some of the girl-players from Odisha and West Bengal- Sonali, Archana, Putul & Dolon told that they were very happy to reach in Punjab and that too at the vast campus of the University: “We are getting good accommodation and food here. All are very co-operative and it is a great experience for us.” Another girl fromPunjab team Vasundhara said that she and her team mates have practiced hard to have winning trophy in their state’s name only.
Results of the Day’s Matches: In today’s Softball Boy’s Championship Rajasthan defeated Goa by a score of 8/7. Kerala defeated J&K by 16/6 and among Softball Girls Championship Tamil Nadu defeated Nagaland 10/0, Andhra Pradesh defeated Himachal Pradesh by 15/2 and Rajasthan defeated Goa 8/7.
