LPU celebrated World Tourism Day: Organised awareness walk for the global theme of 2013

*Observed theme “Tourism and water: Protecting our common future” is in support of United Nations’ International Year of Water Cooperation
*Students from 26 countries and 28 States of India observed the theme in true spirit




Jalandhar: In consonance with global celebrations, LPU’s School of Hotel Management & Tourism organised World Tourism Day (WTD) today at LPU Campus. On the eve of WTD-2013, an awareness walk on the global theme of the year- “Tourism and water: Protecting our common future” was organised by university students. The WTD theme is in support of United Nations’ International Year of Water Cooperation. The walk also included “Nukkad Natak”(street plays) performances upholding the theme. Additional Director (Technical Education) Government of Punjab, S Mohanbir Singh Sidhu was specially invited guest of the day.
Students from 26 countries and 28 States of India observed the theme of the year in true spirit and exhibited culture of their areas. Under World Food Mart contest, these students prepared Bhutanese, Chinese, Mexican, South Indian, Gujarati, Punjabi, Nepalese dishes and different sweets. During celebrations, informative presentations, folk dances, poetry-recitation, regional songs, tourism related quiz, fashion show remained other attractions.  Participating students were happy on learning a lot about the conservation of water in relation to tourism. 
Highlighting tourism’s role in water access, Mr Sidhu said: “I am glad to see World Tourism Day celebrations at the university. These are massive and well planned to implement needs and values of tourism among students. Such efforts will further propagate fast developing tourism industry in India.”  Expecting much from the youth, Mr Sidhu asked students to implement the theme of the year to the core and work for making a peaceful existence for all.”
Congratulating the organizing school of the university and its students, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal said: “Such special day celebrations make us committed to the cause and purpose of the day. In this regard, ‘Tourism’ has proven to provide environmentally sound solutions. This time it is a great awakening towards conservation and sustainable use of water sources. We should all endeavour to understand the importance and promise to contribute to a more sustainable water future.”

Canadian Minister -Commercial Ms Sara Wilshaw visited LPU

Jalandhar: Minister (Commercial) and Senior Trade Commissioner at Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, Ms Sara Wilshaw visited Lovely Professional University today. Mr Gurbans Sobti, Trade Commissioner Consulate General of Canada, accompanied Ms Sara. Visiting Canadian Minister utilized this opportunity to discuss possible collaboration of LPU with Canadian Universities and Colleges for various study programs. This discussion was extended to work towards setting up Centre of Excellence in Hydrology and Bio-energy at LPU. Both the dignitaries were accorded warm welcome by LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal &Pro Chancellor Ms Rashmi Mittal.
In her current role, Ms Sara is responsible for Canada’s commercial relationship with India and the 8 trade offices Canada has located across the country. Having many years experience, and being the Director of Trade Commissioner Service Support division and Director-General in the Office of the Chief Trade Commissioner, Ms Sara is continuously making efforts in laying the groundwork for Canada’s Global Commerce Strategy. She appreciated the research activities at the university and wished to have possible tie-ups with the university.
Trade Commissioner (Consulate General of Canada) Mr Sobti informed that Canada and Punjab are already doing trade in many areas. The possible collaboration with LPU will further strengthen this with ushering of many new opportunities in the areas of education and research.
Thanking the guests for their kind visit and considerations thereof, Chancellor Mr Mittal said: “We assure all co-ordination for pursuance of possible tie-ups and collaborative research works. With the establishment of Centre of Excellence in Hydrology and Bio-energy at LPU, we will strive to make our country a renowned leader in developing renewable energy techniques.”

University of Delhi finishes as Winner at LPU hosted AIU’s Inter University Zonal Chess Championship-2013

Jalandhar: University of Delhi ended its campaign as winner at LPU hosted Association of Indian Universities’ Inter University Zonal Chess Championship-2013.  In this spectacular competitive event, Panjab University Chandigarh, Punjab Technical University Jalandhar, Punjabi University Patiala achieved second, third and fourth position respectively. These four teams have now qualified to participate in AIU’s Inter Zonal National Chess Championship to be held at Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri (Maharashtra). The huge consolation that the other 15 teams could draw from the event was their massive participation and display of the best game-skills. Akshay Anand of PTU was adjudged with best performance for 100% win in all the five rounds.
Congratulating the Winners & Runners up teams, and encouraging all other participating students, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal said: “Games are meant to be played in true spirit and not for only winning. One has to come out with the best from within to be self satisfied with self performance. I am happy to see that the participating teams stayed at the campus as a closely knit family and enjoyed the LPU environment.” Mr Mittal also appreciated LPU’s Department of Sports for untiring efforts in making the event a grand success.
Sharing her experiences at LPU Campus, one of the female participants from Jammu University, Swadha said: “I and all of my team members are very much impressed with the lodging-boarding arrangements made for the players. All the staff members here are very co-operative.” AIU observer Dr GS Ruhal, Chief Arbiter Dr Rajendra Sharma, Deputy Arbiter Nitin were also happy on fair outcome of the championship.
Scorer Kirti Sharma informed that University of Delhi won over all other teams by gaining 17 points.  Panjab University Chandigarh remained runners up with 16 points. PTU got 14 and Punjabi University Patiala 13 points. LPU also got 13 but lost in match point sum as it got 27 in comparison to PUP with 30. Trailing them remained in a chronological order HPU Shimla, Kurukshetra University, GNDU Amritsar, CCSU Meerut, Kumaon University Nanital, DCRUST Murthal, Chandigarh University, HNB Garhwal University, Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalya, Jammu University J & K, Lucknow University, CDLU Sirsa, DRML Avadh University and Islamic University Kashmir.  
Result of the 5th Round: University of Delhi defeated  Kumaon University Nainital by 4-0; Panjab University Chandigarh  defeated GNDU Amritsar by 3-1; Punjabi University Patiala tied with LPU by 2-2;  Himachal Pardesh University defeated DCRUST Murthal by 2.5-1.5;  PTU defeated HNB Garhwal University by 4-0; KUK subdued Jammu University by 4-0; CCS University of Meerut remained ahead from Lucknow University by 4-0; Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya routed CDLU Sirsa by 3.5 -1.5 and DRML Avadh University got bye points.

Finale of AIU’s North Zone Inter University Chess Tournament-2013 will establish notable Chess-skills’ supremacy at LPU

Jalandhar: The status of Association of Indian Universities’ (AIU’s) North Zone Inter University Chess Tournament-2013, being organised at LPU, has now been elevated.  The championship is witnessing extra ordinary playing skills of 24 FIDE (World Chess Federation) rated players along with others. Rated in accordance to international ELO rating system, these players from different universities are trying tough to excel their competitors. As such the finale, the 5th round of the tournament, is going to establish notable zonal Chess-skills’ supremacy at LPU Chess Hall, on 25th September.
FIDE rated six players  are from University of Delhi (DU); five each are from Panjab University Chandigarh (PUC) and GNDU Amritsar; three from Punjab Technical University Jalandhar (PTU); two from Kurukshetra University (KUK); and, one each from  Punjabi University Patiala (PUP), Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU) Meerut and  host LPU. Top rated player from PUC is Himal Gusain with rating of 2314, from DU Ritwan Sauntra 2075, from PTU Akshay Anand 1828, from GNDU Amandeep Singh 1718, from PUP Sukhjit Singh 1698, from CCSU Anshul Bathla 1649, from KUK Sahil Dhawan 1590 and Jeeru Yaswanth from LPU is with rating of 1544. The player with highest rating is considered to be tough to win over.
AIU’s observer for the Championship, Dr GS Ruhal seemed very satisfied with the arrangements made at LPU. He also expressed that LPU has good infrastructure for even organizing Inter Zonal Chess Championship. He also applauded the arbiters’ role during different matches held. Illustrative, the ELO rating system is a method for calculating relative skill levels of players in competitor-versus-competitor games such as chess. This system is named after its creator Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-born American physics professor.
National Arbiter Mr Dinesh Gera informed that the teams leading with full points are University of Delhi and Panjab University with 7 Match Points each. Trailing them are LPU Phagwara, Punjabi University Patiala, Kumaun University Nanital and GNDU Amritsar, with 6 points each.  Himachal Pradesh University Shimla, DCRUST Murthal and PTU Jalandhar are with 5 points each. Jammu University J & K, Kurukshetra University, HNB Garhwal University and CCSU Meerut have amassed 4 points each. Lucknow University is with 3 points.

University of Delhi and Panjab University Chandigarh tied with 2-2; Punjab Technical University  and GNDU Amritsar also tied with 2-2;   Punjabi University Patiala defeated Himachal Pardesh University by 4- 0; Kumaun University Nainital subdued Jammu University by 3.5-0.5; Lovely Professional University bested Lucknow University by 3.5-0.5; DCRUST, Murthal beat CDLU Sirsa by 3.5-0.5;   Kurukshetra University  routed Islamic University,Kashmir by 4–0; CCS University of Meerut remained ahead from Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya by 3.5-0.5; HNB Garhwal University defeated DRML Avadh University by   3-1.

Penultimate 4th Round of Association of Indian Universities’ North Zone Inter University Chess Championship will show the best Chess today at LPU

Jalandhar: Penultimate 4th Round of the Association of Indian Universities’ (AIU) North Zone Inter University Chess Championship will come out with the best Chess today at LPU Chess Hall. The third round of the Championship, which is being hosted by LPU, has laid the competitions on an interesting track. Maximum of the teams are trying to reveal their prowess to be on the winning position. The teams leading with full points are defending champion Delhi University and Panjab University with 6 Match Points each. Trailing them are Himachal Pradesh University Shimla and GNDU Amritsar with 5 points each. LPU Phagwara, PTU Jalandhar, Kumaun University Nanital, Punjabi University Patiala & Jammu University J & K have amassed 4 points each. Lucknow University was in a losing position but managed to salvage a draw with DCRUST Murthal.
One of the female participants Preetika Tayal of defending champion team of Delhi University revealed her determination to get her team a sliding win this year too. Tayal said: “I have been competing with boys right from my childhood and have always been in a winning position. This game sharpens my mind so being an economics student this is my first choice, and I will use all my abilities in the remaining rounds to make my team strong.” 

Results of third round: University of Delhi beat Punjab Technical University by 3-1; Panjab University defeated Punjabi University by 3-1; GNDU, Amritsar routed Kurukshetra University by 3-1; Himachal Pardesh University remained ahead from CCS university of Meerut by 3.5-0.5; Lovely Professional University bested HNB Garhwal University  by 3.5-0.5; Jammu University beat CDLU Sirsa  by 3-1; Lucknow University  and DCRUST, Murthal tied with 2 each; Kumaun University,Nainital subdued Chandigarh University by 3-1; Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya crumbled DRML Avadh University by 2.5-1.5.

AIU’s North Zone Inter-University Chess Tournament- 2013 inaugurated at Lovely Professional University

 Jalandhar: AIU’s six-day North Zone Inter-University Chess Tournament 2013 is being organised at LPU. The first round of the tournament, which will continue up to 25th September, commenced today at Chess Hall of the University in Block 3A. Near 150 competing students, their managers and coaches are participating from 19 universities of nine states and union territories. The tournament of five rounds is following Swiss league system, where all the teams will play all rounds without any knock out.  The winning team will be declared after the last round by amassing the scores gathered in different rounds by the concerned team members. A six-member team, headed by International Arbiter in Chess & Development Mr Rajinder Sharma, is observing for the fair-game playing under the Federation Internationale Des Eches (World Chess Federation), FIDE, rules.
Deputy Chief Arbiter (FIDE) Mr Nitin informed: “This popular ancient game of ‘Check & Mate’ is going to be very tough at LPU as more than 20 already FIDE ranked international players are participating in it. Among them highest ranked player is IM (International Master) norm Himal Gusain (2314) from Panjab University Chandigarh. The moves of Knights, Pawns, Bishops, Rooks are, indeed, going to be highly interesting as the tournament reaches its culmination”.
Inaugurating the Chess-Tournament, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal said: “It is a proud privilege that AIU has entrusted the responsibility of organising prestigious Chess Championship to LPU.   We accord warm welcome to all the chess players, their managers & coaches who have reached the campus from different states and universities.” Mr Mittal added: “Such tournaments creatively promote discipline, goal-setting and critical thinking in youth. The event at LPU is being organised following international standards of AIU and World Chess Federation so that the participating young competitors could further relate it to the international platform. I wish that each and every player would come forward with fairness and best of mental abilities to excel, observing all rules and regulations to the core.”
Manager of the team from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Uttarakhand, expressed his happiness on the internationally benchmarked arrangements made by LPU for Tournament Hall, accommodation of the visiting teams and co-operation in all related matters. Similarly, participating students from University of Jammu (J&K), Varsha and Monica and their coach Ajit Singh were seen in jubilant mood on being a part of the tournament.







Results - Lovely Professional University to Jammu University by 4-0, University of Delhi beat Chandigarh University by 4-0; Panjab University to DCRUST,murthal by 4-0; GNDU,Amritsar to Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya by 4-0; Punjab Technical University to DRML Avadh University  by 4-0;  Himachal Pradesh University got 2½ scores against Kurukshetra University  with 1½ scores; Punjabi University to HNB Garhwal University by 3-1; CCS University of Meerut to Islamic University,Kkashmir by 4 – 0; Kumaan University, Nainital got 2½ scores against CDLU Sirsa with 1½. Lucknow University got Bye score of 2.
