14th Senior State Women Boxing Championship concluded at LPU campus

* 10 Gold Medalists will now compete at 14th Senior Women National Boxing Championship at Uttarakhand

Jalandhar: LPU played successful host to three days of action packed boxing for 14th Senior State Women Boxing Championship at its campus. Emerging women boxers of the state exhibited power of their hooks and punches in 54 bouts for ten weight categories.  Out of 70 boxers who competed from all the parts of the state, 10 were honoured with Gold Medals.  These ‘First’ position earners in all of the ten weight categories of the competition will continue vying for national titles at 14th Senior Women National Boxing Championship-2013, to be held in Khatima, Uttarakhand, from 18 to 23 May 2013. The Chief Guest of the day Mrs Anita Som Parkash along with LPU Vice Chancellor Dr Ramesh Kanwar and Director General Er HR Singla honoured the illustrious women-boxers with medals and certificates.

Manpreet Kaur of Patiala got declared the Best Boxer and Baljit Kaur of Kapurthala-A as the Best Loser, being just devoid of winning gold medal on technical grounds. Both of them were given cash prizes by the President of Sardar Bawa Singh Johal Boxing Academy, Phagwara.


Congratulating coveted position holders at the Championship, Mrs Som Parkash inspired more and more girls to adopt this sport for their self defence also. Taking the example of the best woman boxer of the country Mary Kom, VC LPU Dr Kanwar motivated the women boxers to devote themselves to the core to bring more glory to the nation through their national and international wins. Illustrative, the Championship was organised by District Boxing Association Kapurthala under the auspices of Punjab Boxing Association (PBA).


Many other boxers from Sangrur, Bathinda, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Muktsar, Ropar, Fazilka and other areas of the state exhibited their fist-powers to win II and III positions. On contacting the best boxer Ms Manpreet, she assured that she will not only bring laurels to the state during national competition but also reach international arena to gather many medals for the country. Best loser Ms Baljit said: “I was sure to go ahead. Somehow I could not succeed this time, however I will continue practicing to show my worth next year. One thing more which I want to share is that LPU is a great university to promote such activities. I have never and nowhere else seen such arrangements and co-operation prior to this.”

LPU hosting three-day 14th Senior State Women Boxing Championship at its campus

Jalandhar: LPU is hosting 14th Senior State Women Boxing Championship at its campus from 26th to 28th April. The three day championship will feature 70 Punjab Women Boxing starlets from 19 districts of the state. Around 54 bouts will be fought for 10 weight categories ranging from 48 Kgs to 81+ Kgs. Being organized by District Boxing Association Kapurthala under the auspices of  Punjab Boxing Association (PBA), the event has support from Sardar Bawa Singh Johal Boxing Academy, Phagwara, an organization devoted towards the development of sport in the state.

Organizing Secretary of the Championship, S Jasbir Singh Shergill informed that State Championship provides a platform for emerging boxers to display their skills and excel at the national arena. The event assumes added importance as ten gold-medalists from this will be able to show their worth at 14th Senior Women National Boxing Championships, Khatima, Uttrakhand, to be held from 18th to 23rd May, 2013.  From ‘National’ the first three position holders in each weight categories will get camp coaching. This coaching will serve as a selection ground to shortlist players to further constitute the final core group for the World Championships.

LPU Pro Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal accorded best wishes to all the top and emerging women combatants of the state so that they may reach the national and international rings in future to bring glory to the state.

One of the boxers for 60 kg weight category, from Ropar, Ms Rupinder Kaur said that the arrangements at the University are very good: “We have got good staying, relaxing and eating arrangements. In addition we have access to practice arena also so that we may prove our worth.”

Bollywood Stars Neha Dhupia & Jimmy Shergill entertained LPU students

Jalandhar:  Femina Miss India 2002 title winner & bolly-wood actress Neha Dhupia, and  heart-throb of crores of Punjabi audience Jimmy Shergill entertained LPU students, today, at the campus. Both of them made enchanting performances for students on the famous numbers of their earlier films as well as forthcoming Punjabi movie ‘Rangeelay’. Stars got into the students-crowd to dance along with them. Students’ vogue for them compelled the visiting star-duo to continue presenting dialogues, actions, dancing- steps for an hour together. During this all, thousands of enthralled LPU students from 28 Indian states and 30 countries continued yelling, yodeling, tossing their heads, swaying to and fro, stamping their feet on varied rhymes and rhythms. On this occasion director Navanait Singh and writer Dheeraj Rattan were also present. 

While interacting with LPU students of Journalism and Film Production, Neha Dhupia also Punjabi Icon award winner, said: “Regional movies have got a wider audience across the globe.  I am much excited for my first Punjabi film ‘Rangeelay’ and I can really feel the hum here as LPU has got a huge audience.   We must work for such films to promote Indian culture and values." She also shared that she would continue taking up regional projects with interesting scripts: “I would also like to star in Bengali and Marathi films too. I have already done two movies in Telugu.”

Similarly Jimmy Shergill, who has a huge fan following amid LPU audience, interacted: “I am glad to see increasing popularity of Punjabi cinema. I think regional languages have been doing well but Punjabi films have now started getting great opening. Now, I am looking forward to the release of my new production venture, which I hope will bring more popularity towards Punjabi cinema. He also shared tips about production of films and organization of film festival, particularly regional.

LPU Pro Chancellor Ms Rashmi Mittal asked students to grasp the hard working culture of the visiting stars who in spite of having much material gains continue struggling for more and more achievements.

Setting novel milestone, LPU secured placement for its 70% of the batch of Physical Education

Jalandhar: Lovely Professional University has brought a new revolution in the field of Physical Education study programmes by introducing campus placement for its students. Recently, near 70 % students (30 students out of 45) from the School of Physical Education got selected by Bangalore based ‘LeapStart’-India’s Premier Physical Education & Sports programme. Selected as physical education teachers for different schools across India, students will join their duties in the month of June at a salary package offered near Rs 2.5 lacs per annum.

Two of the selected students, Sheetal (Student of M Phil in Phy Edu) and Divakar Jyoti (II year student of M P Ed) said: “Such a step of the university for maintaining bright career of the sports students will have a long term effect in the life of the students. Previously, it used to be considered that there is almost no placement for physical education students. Now students like us are much motivated by the efforts of our teachers and university management as we have been provided a great launch pad for successful career ahead.”

LPU’s Directorate of Distance Education organized 2nd annual Distance Education Centers Meet ‘Manthan-2013’

Jalandhar: Observing the year 2013 as the year of LPU Connect, LPU’s Directorate of Distance Education organized 2nd annual Distance Education Centers Meet ‘Manthan-2013’ in the campus. Near 1000 counsellors and  center heads, who guide more than 40,000 students at 400 LPU study centers across India and abroad, participated. During the event discussion and presentations were made on how LPU Directorate of Distance Education can take the next big step to provide quality education across the globe.
Congratulating all counsellors and center heads for their commendable and regularly progressing joint efforts, LPU Chancellor Ashok Mittal highlighted the amazing success stories of LPU Distance Education and informed them: “Our Directorate of Distance Education is progressing by leaps and bounds. Big corporate houses like Reliance and top others have joined us. Further growing in the era of distance education, we want to offer the quality program and using technology we would like to bring it as close to regular programs as possible. He said that there are still many villages and remote places where the access to higher education is almost negligible or very rare, and we need to ensure education to all: “We have to step together and fill the gaps created with affordable fee-structure and quality education through quality study material and quality counseling. To the heads of the international distance education centers, he said: “We need to let the world know that Indian education system is the best. Working with this image, we will open more education centers in different countries.” On the same day Apple I Pad & Mobile Phone applications, new website as well access to many hundred books were also launched.
Illustrative, distance educationcenters, being the points of contact on behalf of the University, have been equipped with complete know-how about the University. Center Heads even from far off centers in foreign countries and Indian states including Kuwait, Kingdom of Lesotho, Nepal, Gujarat, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai, Rajasthan, Uttrakhand, and other states were present under all enthusiasm. They shared their experiences that how they feel about LPU Distance Education system and how it is different from other institutions by focusing on quality and quality alone. Mr Jatinder of Achievers Academy in Kuwait shared that the ‘Meet Manthan 2013’ has motivated much to work more and more to reach prospective students in masses: “ I am happy to share that students in Kuwait has much information about LPU’s saga of successes. LPU bade best wishes to 8000+ Final Year Students at university’s annual Commencement Ceremony

Jalandhar: This year-2013, more than 8000 passing out students of LPU are ready to face the world as its true global citizens. Of these 6600 are regular students and 1500 belong to distance education study programmes. In order to bid blissful adieu to these students, LPU organised its 8-houred long annual Commencement Ceremony, today. National as well as International Students were seen hugging, laughing while sharing fruitful outcomes of different sessions lived at LPU. On the one hand they were happy to enter new phase of their life, within a month’s time, on the other they were emotional on being separated from their class-fellows and alma-mater. To make memories persist forever, students underwent ‘Discipline” wise interactions at their respective schools, Stall Visits around University’s Sunken-stage and Bidding Adieu Tea at SBRM Square. Special celebrative entertaining arrangements were through class singing-performances by ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ star Shahnaz Akhtar, who sang for their choicest songs. Added to this were swirling dances on musical tunes by outgoing students themselves at Campus Cafe stage.  

Bidding best-wishes to all students, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal said: “Build flourishing lives for yourselves and prove your worth towards solving out mankind problems. Our sole motive of providing education is to make students society oriented. I advise you to work sincerely and be always up to the expectations of others during your professional career and take India to new glorious heights!” Mr Mittal also motivated them to make their parents, alma-mater and themselves feel ever proud for their future outcomes: "LPU has taken you from now onwards as its true brand ambassadors. Propagate your learning at LPU to be global leaders. On our part, we promise to keep on adding new resources every year to LPU to make it grow with new projects and dimensions for next batches of students like you.”

On this passionate occasion, students and teachers had great informal & interactive meetings to rejuvenate moments spent together. The Junior-students had also contributed a lot to memorable send-off through their rocking performances, singing and dances.  One of the outgoing international students, Misozi an M.Ed. student from Zambia said passionately: “I am very sad on bidding farewell to my Indian class-fellows. I had a great time here and in addition to my studies, I also learnt Hindi and Punjabi speaking from them. I will ever cherish moments spent in their great accommodation.”  Most of the other students were of the view that LPU has made them confident enough to get engaged more directly in helping society and grow themselves, as well:  “We promise passionately not to confine merely to the pursuit of wealth.  We will keep remembering that LPU is a place that enabled us to define and transform ourselves as individuals.”

Top Employers & Job aspirants availed of the best opportunities at LPU’s Mega Career cum Job Fair

Jalandhar:  The campus of Lovely Professional University was all abuzz with activity and thrill, as curtains drew on “LPUCareer Cum Job Fair 2013” on Tuesday. The two day job and career oriented fair drew more than 9000 of aspirants from various disciplines of learning, as recruiters shortlisted thousands of students. The fair which witnessed participation of more than 50 companies was marked by increased enthusiasm on the part of students, who on the basis of their acumen, interest and academic performance sought career advices from HR experts and participated in various real-time placement tests as well. 

Kanchan, who got placed at a pay package of Rs. 4.0 lakhs said, “Starting my career with a firm of my choice is a dream come true for me.  My success emanates from the inputs of my teachers and the support of parents. Thanks to the wonderful campus culture of LPU also, which has a great bearing on what I have learnt as a student in my University.” The most visible feature of the fair was that it was more broad-based in context of participating companies, which was reflected from the broad array of sectors that were represented by the companies dealing in varied forms of products and services. Among the major companies that participated in the fair were IBM, HCL, Artech, Tech Mahindra, Videocon, NIIT Limited, DLF Pramerica, Reliance Money, EUREKA FORBES and many more.

The mega fair ended with the top brass of LPU interacting with the successful students, participants and the members of organising team.  Addressing the gathering, LPU Chancellor Shri Ashok Mittal said, “The responsibility of any educational entity is not confined only to enhancement of skill-sets and augmentation of competencies of its students; but to provide them with ample opportunities that can help them to reap benefits from what they have learnt in the campus. LPU, since its very inception, has been committed to bring the best of recruiters from the job market for its students, and the present Job Fair is one of the series of events that the University has planned for placing its students.” He stated that in the next edition of the Fair, to be held in 2014, LPU will plan to increase the number of companies to twice of the figure of the present one.

Thousands got selected & shortlisted on first day of India’ largest Career cum Job Fair at LPU Campus

Jalandhar: India’s largest two-day Career cum Job Fair inaugurated at LPU Campus, today, which witnessed an over-whelming response from both job seekers and companies from across India. Over 5000 job seekers walked-in, on the first day, to seek better paying jobs with the most renowned MNCs & Blue Chip companies participating at the fair. Participating companies spanned across industries including IT, ITeS, Education, Pharmacy, Automobiles, Banking, Insurance sectors.  The first day came out with selection and short-listing of nearly 1000 candidates. Job aspirants even from distant states including Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and others kept thronging LPU campus till late in the evening. 

Remarking on the ‘Fair’, IBM Staffing – Recruiter Mr Nishank Gupta said, "The size of walk-ins to our stall is pretty good and so is the quality. We are also making on the spot offers. One of the things which I want to specially mention is the support provided by LPU student- volunteers who actually helped in handling and streamlining our processes.” Similarly, Mr Vijay Magotra, Campus Relationship Manager from WIPRO is of the opinion: “Our present association with LPU is very fruitful and we intend to continue to build the relationship in the future as well. This fair has helped us to select candidates conveniently and as per our requirements.”

LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal said: “This Job Fair is to increase awareness of the students about employment opportunities available in the related area of their dreams. Along with, it is also to enable employers to discuss career and training opportunities face to face with the job seekers.  I am happy to note that thousands of students from different Indian states have received first-hand opportunity to reach potential employees and many of them have met with their selection, thereof.” One of the job seekers, an M Tech student Roohinder, thanked LPU for arranging country’s largest job fair: “I am very happy to avail this golden chance through LPU’s efforts. Jalandhar: Talking to Media, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal informed: “Sharing corporate social responsibility and to bridge academia and industry, LPU is organizing one of the largest two-day mega Career cum Job Fair at its campus on15th & 16th April, 2013. Grand International heritage celebrations marked the conclusive day of 4th annual festival‘One World’ at LPU

*Heritage Procession, Heritage Ramp-Walk, Heritage Performances and Heritage Exhibition highlighted the proud inheritance of 26 countries









Jalandhar:  Bringing the world together at single location, university’s annual international festival “One World” concluded at LPU campus. The concluding day saw a unique fashion show where international students showcased their attires, and this was followed by mesmerizing musical and dance performances. Highlight of the eve was Mongolian dance of the body-Bielgee performed on the tunes of musical instruments morin khuur and yochin. Iranian folk dance  Afsaneh Ballet, typical dances of Thailand Fawn Thai & Sri-Nuan- under sweetness of music with teut-teung drum beats, Afghan dance ‘Attan’, graceful Balinese dance of Indonesia LAY-gong and santal dance of Bangladesh also enthralled all. The displays at 30 stalls explained much about the countries represented. Specialties included monuments, archaeological objects, architectural designs, wildlife, Landscapes, Geological supremacies, antique acquirements, cultural and allied art form dominances. 

Awarding the participating international students and schools of the University, which toiled to promote international heritage, Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal expressed: “I am happy to see the cultural convergence of so many countries during this celebration. This is really an eye-opener and a learning experience for me as well.” He further advised students to be most accessible and interactive with each other to share and learn other’s culture: “Make friends from other countries and increase global understanding. We live in a beautiful world, have a distinct identity, strong traditions and should learn warm welcome for others.” 

International students Bhawana Chhetri (Bhutan), Ratul Talukder (Bangladesh), Ahmed Hassan (Maldives), Lakshika Jayakody (Sri Lanka) and other international students were seen very happy to be a great part in different activities of participation. Ms Lashika said: “When I started from my country for LPU at India, I was much afraid to think whether I will get adjusted in new culture or not. Now, I am very indebted to LPU environ where I not only got a chance to represent my country’ culture but also absorbed the culture of so many other countries. I also have high words of praise for Indian students who supported me in my activities of celebrations.”

Two-day annual International Fest celebrations “ONE WORLD” inaugurated at LPU to let students imbibe global perspective

Jalandhar: Providing a common platform to hundreds of foreign students from 26 countries to represent heritage of their respective country, LPU has inaugurated two-day annual International Fest celebrations “ONE WORLD” at open air theatre of the campus. The theme being celebrated this year is "Global Heritage" under which foreign students initiated the event through one kilo-meter long procession. Showcasing and upholding cultural inheritance of their respective country, international students kept on dancing, singing and yelling all the way wearing typical dresses, ornaments and other attributes. Maintaining global unity, Indian students co-operated with International ones in celebrative actions. Students also showcased their talents with respect to their respective country’s myths, folk-lore, tribal-tales, urban development, music, literature, chivalry and other achievements. Thousands of on-looking students witnessed and celebrated the spirit of ‘One World’.  On this eve, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal unveiled the symbolic clay model of the Globe which revealed oneness of the world.

Congratulating all the organizing and participating students, Chancellor Mr Mittal expressed: “We encourage foreign students to organise this annual event where they showcase and share their cultures with the Indian students. This helps promotion and imbibing of the cultural heritage of other countries to further uphold and celebrate ‘unity in diversity’.” Continuing he said: “University always wants to remain a global player under the biggest aim of upholding its vast cultural diversity among students, so that they imbibe global understanding. As such, students must strengthen the common string that keeps binding all in one-ness. On these lines, we are striving to propagate education in such a way that students prove themselves as truly globally fit citizens.” 

Participating 26 countries included students from Afghanistan, Iran, USA, Rwanda, Bhutan, Indonesia,  Bangladesh, Burundi, DR Congo, Nepal, Nigeria, Tanzania, Tibet, Thailand, Kenya, Sudan, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Cameroon, Maldives, Uganda, Zambia and more. After making multi-coloured performances, students reassembled near Uni-Mall for depicting and sharing their heritage through specially raised separate stalls. This exhibition will continue till tomorrow under various elaborative displays about religious, cultural, social heritage etc. 

On this celebration, Putcha Koetnoi a student from Thailand said: “We are very happy to represent our country. We saw that other students enjoyed dances and songs of our culture with a feeling of one-ness. This celebration has definitely made us more practical with an elaborated insight into how world can be one leaving aside all self interests.”  Reshma Bahri from Iran and Bolorchimeg Gantumur from Mongolia  hold: “We understand that the unity of the human species lies in its diversity and we are happy to note that this great celebration is designed to enable students with distinctive cultural expressions work closely together.”

LPU students’ Music Album ‘Verto’ launched during campus visit of Bolly-wood actor cum singer Ayushmann Khurrana

Jalandhar: Much awarded for his singing and acting, Bollywood star-actor Ayushmann Khurrana (of movie Vicky Donor fame) entertained LPU students during his visit to the campus today. Amid his scintillating performances, LPU students’ Music Album ‘Verto’ was launched by LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal.  ‘Verto’ album contains lyrics, music & singing by LPU students which has mesmerizing tones of Sufism, Classical, Western, Fusion, Rock and allied melodious harmonies. On this eve Music Concert ‘Verto’ was also organized to introduce and felicitate ‘Verto’ star cast. Massive performances by students and Indian Idol fame Sheena Chawla enthralled all.

Accompanied by co-star Kunaal Roy Kapur,  Khurrana was very delighted the way he wanted and enjoyed presence of thousands of LPU student-fans from all the Indian states and 30 countries. On the demand of students, Ayushmann sang two romantic and youthful songs of movie in his own voice and got connected well with the spell bound audience. One of the songs 'Sadi Gali Aaja' is Khurrana’s own creation and another 'Tu hi tu' is an innovation which took students into dream-world and left them happier and stress free than before. Being himself a great hard-worker, he advised the vibrant LPU youth to keep on efforts to let success come unto them all the way. He asked them to learn more and more to reach the heights. 

LPU students who have toiled in lead roles for versatile music composition for ‘Verto’ are Ishwinder Kataria Arsh (Lead Guitar), Raunak Bhardwaj (Rhythm Guitar), Shivenderjit Savy (Drums), Gaurav Sharma (Keyboard) and Akshat Singh (Bass Guitar). Lyrics are contributed by Peeyush Sharma, whereas incredible vocal range has been provided by Abhradipta Banerjee,   Shubhendu Mishra and Shilpa Surroch. Akshat shared with Media that he and other ‘Verto’ team members are not professionals from music field and belong to professional programmes of Engineering: “We are thankful to the university officials and teachers who identified our talents and made us to reach a high platform with such a great launch. Our joys know no bounds now as we have established ourselves in accordance to our passions as lyricist, composer & singer through this album.”

Congratulating the entire team of ‘Verto’ LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal wished continuous success for each and every member: “University tries its level’s best to let students grow as per their talents and skills. On these lines this opportunity to students of Mechanical, Electronics and Computer engineering programmes was provided to get this music album framed, merely through their own contributions. We are further making efforts to launch this creation of students launched on famous music channels. In addition, students will also be let aware about the marketing procedures for their creative product.”

LPU honoured hundreds of students for their exceptional achievements during annual 'University Honour Ceremony'

*80 students awarded in academics, 3 in research, 26 in Cultural and 100 students got honoured for sports achievements 








Jalandhar: Upholding specially devised annual custom of awarding exemplary students, LPU honoured more than 200 students, today, at its SBRM auditorium during 4th University Honouring Ceremony. Students who made outstanding achievements in academics, research, cultural and sports activities during last session (2012-13) were awarded with certificates of University Roll of Honour. Cash prizes worth Rs 18 lacs were also distributed for excellence in respective fields. 80 students in academics, 3 in research, 26 in Cultural and 100 students got awarded for sports’ supremacies.

One of the  awarded students, Munny Kumar (Bachelors in Physical Education Programme), who hails from Punjab, has been honoured with Rs 47,500 for six achievements in cultural activities, said: “ No doubt, I always have faith in my abilities but it all goes to the university which identified my hidden talents and projected me on different daises. I want to say that our university deserves all appreciation for our consistent grooming to achieve more and more success.” Two of the proud fathers S Paramjit Singh and Mr Inderjit Beri of the awarded students Rupleen Kaur (B Architecture Final Year) and Bhavana Beri (M Tech CSE I Yr student) exclaimed that they did not have words to express happiness on honouring of their daughters!  Sh. Paramjit Singh said: “As and when I came to know about this I was very eager to thank all Rupleen’s teachers and the university management for shaping her perfom well." 

Congratulating all the honoured students and their parents, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal said: "I personally feel that it is the responsibility of the university to find out the hidden talents of the students and to further shape them well. I am pleased to note that university has done its bit in this regard and students have proven their worth in diverse fields not only on state level but on national level also.” Mr Mittal further added: “In the next session University will focus more on research activities, and mentors would be provided to all the students who have such a flare in any of the field.”
