Posted on 03:46 by Unknown

* Microsoft trainers were present to provide hands on training
* 700 Students availed opportunity to join the community of the next generation app developers
* Students learnt and developed applications/software for Windows Phone platform

Jalandhar:  Microsoft India selected Lovely Professional University, as one out of the 54 hub centers across India, to hold India AppFest 2013.  LPU Vice Chancellor, Dr Ramesh Kanwar said: “Going under an enthusiastic response and recognizing rare opportunity, LPU students got together to develop apps for the Windows platform. Students, who wished to brush up their coding skills, geared up to code applications for the whole day.” In fact, on the day of the AppFest, near 700 young developers coded under the supervision of Microsoft Mentor, trainers and Microsoft Student Partners (MSPs). Students submitted the app online - an opportunity to make it available on the Windows Store after thoroughness. AppFest proved to be an ideal platform to learn from experts and explore latest Microsoft technologies and products.

Microsoft Director (Strategic Audience Marketing) Pratima Amonkar is of the view:  "On one hand, the trends in the IT space have evolved over the past few years, creating greater opportunities for students and budding developers. On the other, the global youth unemployment rate is currently at 12.7 percent- double the overall unemployment rate. These two things clearly indicate a gap in demand and supply, and the obvious answer to this is that ‘given the right skills and training, there is lot young technology students can achieve today. This is exactly what we are trying to do: bring together the opportunity and those, who can utilize it.”

Microsoft provided students with free software such as Visual Studio Express for Windows 8, and with free Windows Store registration codes through Microsoft DreamSpark. The focus remained on broad-based consumer applications, incorporating education, games, apps for social good etc. In addition to submitting the apps for evaluation for a chance to get on the Microsoft Store, the training and experience received via this programme will boost the students' employability, and create a more capable developer ecosystem in the country.

Illustrative, founded in 1975, Microsoft is the worldwide leader in software for personal and business computing. The company offers a wide range of products and services designed to empower people through great software - any time, any place and on any device. *More than 80 schools of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, UT Chandigarh & Punjab benefitted

Jalandhar: To improvise and sensitize the fundamental education pattern in schools, LPU has taken up new corporate social responsibility, under its project Disha, to empower school teachers for new teaching pedagogy. Talking to Media, LPU Pro Chancellor Ms Rashmi Mittal informed: “It is generally rested upon universities to make students job ready, thoughtful, pragmatic and socially awakened. However, it cannot be easily done if fundamentals added up at school are not strong. This is true more so in the case of India where schools are still using most of the traditional methodology. Understanding this gap, LPU has started to train and sensitize school teachers and principals on this requirement. For this, we designed two days course and workshop for school teachers and we are happy that principals and teachers from Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) participated in the workshop, showing firm faith in our deliberation.”

Organised at LPU campus, this workshop of project ‘Disha’ saw participation of more than 80 schools from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, UT Chandigarh & Punjab.  About 130 Principals, Heads & PGTs, from Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, Adarsh Sr Sec & other reputed schools participated.  During this, LPU experts held various important technical sessions and Panel Discussion towards Sharing challenges and innovations in School & Higher Education and bridging gap between the both, Hands on Exercise-Emails, Blogs and Personal Web Pages,  e-Learning concepts and lab work, Role of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies in Educational Institutions), Communication Skills, Managing Work Life.  Visiting educators also underwent interactions with senior functionaries of LPU, feedbacks and open forum for discussions and recreational activities. On both the days of the workshop, the teachers of distant places had been provided with suitable lodging, boarding, food and other facilities.

Workshop participant Dr(MS) H Bali, Assistant Commissioner, KVS RO Chandigarh and  teachers Ms Yamini and Ms Sunita from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya,  Mr Rajneesh Dutta from Kendriya Vidyalaya Kullu (Sainj) and Ms S Jolly from KV Pinjore (CRPF) held in common that the workshop provided new prospective on delivery of education. Seeming buoyant, Mr Dutta said: “We have learnt a lot from the subject experts here in the university. I particularly liked the ICT imparting to us in a very simple and easily intelligible way, and also the UMS and RMS of the university, based on this. In fact, much has been gained towards our skills, and now our students will naturally learn the latest trends and technologies through our teachings to them. We want that such efforts should continue in future too.”
