Abstract

LPU researches establish ill effects of Cell Phone Radiation on Human Tissues in the Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan

Deepak Basandrai and A.K. Dhami of Division of Research & Development of Lovely professional University delivered a paper presentation on the topic of “Effect on Cell Phone Radiation on Human Tissues” at Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan & Expo 2012 being conducted at LPU Phagwara.  The subject of effect of mobile radiations has attracted much debate in the last ten years, and various theories have been put forward by researches from all across the world. The study conducted by these two researchers from LPU have established it firmly that radiations associated with mobile phones and mobile towers have drastically ill effects on human health which reveal themselves in the form of serious health hazards for those who are exposed to them for a greater duration than normal, or who spend more time using cell phones for communication.  The study revealed that children and old age people are more prone to be effected by harmful radiation emanating from mobile infrastructure, as they have comparatively more fragile immune system and skull structure. The researchers stated that high level of absorption of mobile radiations lead to excessive cell damage and this condition leads to chronic diseases with long lasting effects.  On their study of those residing near hospitals and schools, the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) on exposed people was measured by means of Portable Power Density meter and the results clearly indicated that greater exposure of mobile radiations have a bearing on the physical and mental alacrity of people. Scientist mentioned in their paper that the cell phones should not be used for more than 30 minutes in a day and never fro more than 6 minutes in a stretch. The radiation from the cell phones can heat up the tissues can lead to some kind of the tumors as well. They added that though the conclusion cannot be completely substantiate right now but for sure with the kind of work happening globally this is bound to come to conclusion.

The scientists concluded in their comments on the subject stated that technology does offer mankind with its endowments, but at the same time we should understand as to how to use technology in a judicious way.

Expo Stall
1.  Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan & Expo 2012 at LPU: Cost effective invention to beat darkness holds potential to illuminate crores of slum dwellings at virtually no price
2.  “Solar Water Bottle”  - a big hit at Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan& Expo 2012 at LPU Campus

In what can be termed as a path breaking step in providing cost effective, environment friendly and readily available source of illumination, scientists have invented an arrangement that will yield illumination equivalent to that of a 100 W bulb. Termed as “Solar Water Bottle”, the device which is marked for its simplicity, yet effectiveness; has been put on display at the ongoing Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan & Expo 2012 at LPU campus. The invention, if adopted on a mass scale, has the potential to illuminate crores of households based in slum areas across the country and abroad. What makes the invention fascinating is the fact that it does not call for any expenditure to ensure light during the day time in the indoors of houses which have no access to electricity.

The inventors made use of the phenomenon of multiple-reflection of light within a fluid media – homogenous solvent of water, Bleaching powder, soda, salt  and vinegar. The solvent helps in convergence of light rays and produce bright illumination. While Bleaching powder, soda and salt helps in scattering of light, vinegar helps in making light denser for reflection.  They made use of a transparent glass bottle on display a normal 1.5 litre coca cola bottle, filled with the solvent; and arranged it within the roof of a dwelling in such a way that half of the same remains exposed to sunlight, whereas the other half peeps inside the roof from ceiling. Natural sun rays, when enter the water filled glass bottle, undergo multiple reflection, produce high intensity illumination capable of providing substantial light indoors.

Solar Water Bottle” is one of the most enchanting demonstrations at Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan & Expo 2012 being organized at LPU. The invention has won accolades from visitors and students from host University alike. Mr. Ashok Mittal, Chancellor LPU, heaped praises on the invention and stated, “Any creation that goes into bringing about transformation in the lives of maximum number of people; especially those who are living at the edge; calls for applause and recognition. I congratulate the scientist behind this invention, for finding a simple yet effective solution to address the problem of non-availability of light in many households. I sincerely wish that more such inventions will emerge in coming times, which I term as the real gains of education.”

1. Presentation by  LPU students  “Real Time Social Network Screening”  at Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan & Expo 2012

-Technology that can control social media ills without putting any causes.

Highlighting the issue of filtering content on internet, more so on social networking websites, Er. Nitish Kant and Er. Ramanpreet Kaur – both students of LPU delivered a presentation on “Real Time Social Network Screening”  at the ongoing Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan & Expo 2012 at LPU Phagwara.  The issue of usage of social network sites for public good is of extreme significance, and has generated much public interest, of late. Technology has delivered on many fronts, and the usage of social networking sites in disseminating public awareness is of extreme significance.  But at the same time, certain content ion the net is proving to disseminate ill effect on the users, and may has the potential of causing much distress to general public. One such example finds it origin in in the recent flurry of net postings on social networking sites, where through a  well devised propaganda panic was created amongst North East Indians on rumours of ethnic assaults on them.

Real Time Network Social Screening is a concept that calls for checking such unfavourable happenings. The technology works by capturing summarised information in the form of texts, images, videos and tries to filter derogatory, inflammatory and offensive content. This is done by creating a large database of offensive words, image names, bit patterns,  image recognition procedures which all work in tandem to identify objectionable content on web, and blocking it for public usage.  Shri Ashok Mittal, Chancellor LPU while hailing the presentation said that censoring of network is a debatable issue, but using this technology ends could be secured without creating censorship.
