LPU to Bring in Trams to Its Campus, a Research Project by Its Students Turning into Reality

Posted on 05:53 by Unknown

Ever thought of a tram chugging off in the Doaba heartland of Punjab? Well, it is just a matter of time to see the heritage mode of transport doing rounds of LovelyProfessional University. The LPU campus will become the only second place in India after Kolkata to have trams running, thanks to a research proposal whose findings have encouraged the University management to go for a transportation system, which suits its requirements and is eco-friendly as well. Apropos this, talks are already in advanced stages with Calcutta Tramways Company Ltd., the operators of the sole tramways system in the country. A circular ring needs to be created that will allow the tram to run across the campus, without interfering with existing mode of transportation flow in the campus.

The project of mass transport within the University campus was envisaged by the university, after observing that the students and staff traversing have to traverse long distances within the 600 acre campus. The need for an intra-campus cost effective and non polluting transport system was long, and as a result invitations of research proposals were invited from the student by the University authorities to address the challenge. Nearly a dozen proposals were received with suggestions ranging from CNG-run autos, electric rickshaws, mini-buses, mono-rail etc.

To get the idea of having a tram transit system in the University was not a cake walk, and was ridden with challenges and hiccups, all the way through. With not many manufacturers in India, the students who were working on this project had to approach manufacturers based in numerous European countries and China, with a view to secure technical knowhow. But the exorbitant prices acted as a dampener, and then the students approached indigenous tram builders of CTC Limited in Kolkata.  But there was a catch again - the trams built by CTC Ltd. Kolkata worked on DC voltage and the University wanted to employ AC voltage system.  The students had to work again to bring amendments to the existing design, and came up with their version of Tram Transit System which works on DC voltage system. Interestingly, the CTC Ltd. Kolkata has now evinced interest in the AC version, and if modalities work out, the same could be employed in the streets of Kolkata in future.

The zeroing down on tram transit system was motivated by a multitude of factors, the most important being that it can be stopped and re-started at short intervals (which is the need of the University, as its having a number of boarding points strewn across its stretched campus) with great efficacy and poses minimal hindrances to parallel pathways. The other big advantage is that it’s an eco-friendly means of transport as it runs on electricity. It is a noiseless means of transport and can be driven in either direction as per the need of the situation. They have a higher passenger carrying capacity and are ideal for commuting between short distances. The operating costs are low, and the safety factor is high as they run on slow speeds and can be easily brought to a halt in comparison with other mass transit systems.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Ashok Mittal Chancellor - LPU stated, “Technology has always been a driving factor at LPU campus. In the past, we have taken numerous tech oriented initiatives for the betterment of students and staff and inclusion of tram transport system will be addition to the legacy of employing technology for making things easier and comfortable for students. The credit of the project goes to the students, who have analysed the needs of campus and come up with a brilliant proposal taking due consideration of the commuters’ requirements, technical feasibility and economic viability. CTC has given its nod to share their technical knowhow with us, and by 2014 LPU will have a dedicated tram system of its own.”

We also anticipate how India can be a patron to Caribbean country for promotion of IT Education and in set up of Information Technology.” He further said: “In fact, for any country education is its great strength. India is investing a lot on education sector and related infra-structure. That is why, education is seeing its phenomenal growth in the country, which in turn is continuously attracting more and more of students from different countries of all the continents of the world.”

Welcoming the great Caribbean leader, known for his outstanding leadership regionally and internationally, Chancellor Mr. Mittal revealed his happiness while saying: “We are very glad to receive Prime Minister Dr Douglas at the campus on request. The visit by a person of his caliber, who has made history by being the first Caribbean Leader to receive the Gandhi-King-Ikeda Peace Award and who has many other honours to his credit, is indeed a proud moment for us.” He added: “His visit will certainly be fruitful towards opportunities for both countries in working together in collaborative areas of mutual interests.”

The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, located in Leeward Islands, is a federal two-island nation in West Indies, for which Dr Douglas is working hard for its significant potential in varied areas. The Prime Minister is also aspirant in seeing improvement for trade and economic relations between the two countries. It is worth noticing that Dr Douglas is an outstanding graduate of the University of the West Indies (UWI) and is also the recipient of a Legacy Award from the American Foundation of the University of the West Indies in New York.

*Hundreds of foreign students shared their culture & traditions along with thousands of Indian ones
*The theme this year was "International FESTIVALS" in contrast to yester year's Songs, Dances, and Tourism
*LPU EYE- Giant Wheel, remained centre of attraction, fun and frolic for all*26 Special Stalls exhibited the exuberances of different countries in the form of varied articles and forms like clothes, ornaments etc

Jalandhar: Fairs and Festivals of 26 Countries across world were showcased at the campus of Lovely Professional University, during its annual programme 'One World'. The countries, which participated, in this event, included students from Norway, Germany, Afghanistan, Iran, Rwanda, Bhutan, Indonesia, Italy, Bangladesh, Burundi, DR Congo, Nepal, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Sudan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Cameron and more. Opening the fest, a huge colourful cultural procession, comprising of more than 700 participating students, proceeded, dancing, singing, stamping and thumping on the beats and rhythms of their region, to assemble at the celebration point made at Campus Stage of the University. Shrieks, yells and yelps of enchantment and transcendental ecstasy pervaded all the way, where they continued non-stop display about thematic peculiarities of their respective country to highlight festive occasions, dances, melodies, attires. Also, the day saw the inauguration of 26 Special International Stalls, from where the other on looking students came to know about the facts and figures of countries new for them for currencies, royal heritage, geographical history, Customs, Costumes, Languages, and meals.

After unveiling the sculptured structure of "Global Peace" incarnated, and elaborating about the event, the Chancellor of LPU Mr Ashok Mittal expressed: "Yesterday's world was set on its differences; today's world has a propensity to unification. On these lines, we, too, want to have our international students from across the globe to get integrated into culture of the University which is to up hold virtues and goodness prevailing all around the globe, through varied customs, traditions, fairs, festivals. Organization of "One World" is for the students to learn and respect not only their own culture but that of other countries as well." He added: "In this era of globalization, it is most important to have knowledge and awareness about living in a unified world. So, the students belonging to different countries must strengthen the common string that keeps binding all together in oneness. In fact, we are trying hard to disseminate knowledge in such a way that LPU students may prove themselves as truly globally fit citizens. "

Celebrating the theme of the year, International students put on view the fairs and festivals of their respective countries like Seizdahbedar, Navrooz, Calabar, Falgun, Boisakh, Eid, Saba Saba, Nane Nane, Umuganura, Kiota Izina, Yalda, Thimpsu, Tshechu and many more. Students kept swinging on the tunes of these celebrations and tried to learn the special trends, bends and twists of a particular country. It remained fun and merry-making the whole inaugural day under a perfect global understanding. They also enjoyed the high ride on LPU EYE-Giant Wheel to have an aerial view of the whole of the University.

On this celebration, Christophe and Ange from Rwanda said: "We are very happy to represent our country. We saw that other students enjoyed visiting different kiosks with a feeling of visiting the whole of world itself. This celebration has definitely made us more practical with an elaborated insight into how world can be one leaving aside all self interests." Dorji Wangchuk and Jigme Tenzin from Bhutan hold: "We understand that the task of our time is to bring ourselves to the realization that the unity of the human species lies in its diversity. That is why the Festival's events are designed to enable distinctive cultural expressions to gather more closely together."
