LPU’s Directorate of Distance Education Launched its Fifth International Study Center in Kuwait

*4 International study centers, one each in USA & Sri Lanka and two in Nepal already exist

Jalandhar: Resolute to reach national as well as international education seekers and to make quality & affordable education easily accessible, LPU’s Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) has launched its fifth International study center in Fahaheel, Kuwait. Prior to this 4 international study centers, one each in USA & Sri Lanka and two in Nepal have already been benefitting the thousands of international and NRI students.  In this regard, two more distance education study centers are soon going to be opened in Dubai and Qatar.

LPU Distance Education (DE) has a strong network of 350+ national and international ‘Study Centers’ that enables students to choose the one that is easily accessible to them. These centers act as access points for advice, counseling and rendering various student support services as required for the purpose of LPU DE. Fahaheel is a suburb of Kuwait, where Kuwaiti Bedouin population and many Afghans, Sri Lankans, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Egyptians as well as Indians live. As such, this study center is going to help students of many countries, at a stretch.

Speaking on the launch, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal said: “After reaching in every state of India, we have made access to international arena with our theme of distance education- ‘Educating India, Educating the World’. The present study center in Kuwait and many other centers soon to be opened in different countries are our efforts towards global education. We want that each and every education aspirant, national or international, must have quality higher education, in an easily accessible and affordable way. Also to ensure top quality distance education, our programmes are offered through innovative curriculum and unique learning methodologies.”

In fact, LPU’ Distance Education system has strong recognition not only in India but abroad also. The online Learning Management System of LPU DE has become the winner of best open & distance learning initiative of the year e-India 2012  Award. It has also been ranked as the 7th best in distance education by a popular magazine ‘Human Factor’. In fact, LPU DE has envisioned establishment of a versatile distance education system, and LPU’s footing on the foreign lands is indeed strong effort to let all professionals, entrepreneurs, housewives and others look-forward to pursue required higher education.

LPU Pledges to Feature in the List of Top 200 Universities of the World in the Conference with the Theme: “Together We Can, Together We Will”

Jalandhar:  The Top Brass of management of LPU Phagwara assembled at the annual Self-assessment cum Planning conference, wherein all the senior functionaries  including Chancellor, Pro Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Director General, Senior Deans & Directors the University got together to review the work done in the last year and chalk out strategies for the forthcoming year.  Presumed to be India’s largest annual educational congress, the conference titled “Share the Vision-2012”, is an administration-cum-management oriented mega event wherein each and every employee of the University – from the Chancellor to those working at the lowest rung participate and discuss the policies and procedures to take the University in the ensuing times. The eleventh edition of two day annual conference which concluded on 24th December, 2012 saw participation of 3500 university staff members under a common roof upholding the theme “Together we can, Together we will”.

After observing moments of silence to reminisce the souls departed in 2012, the conference was inaugurated by lighting of ceremonial lamp by Shri Ashok Mittal. In his address to the gathering, he stated, “LPU has propelled itself to eminence and reputation because of contribution of all of you.  In unison, we have to reach to higher glories, and for that we all have to strive together arms in arms.  LPU exists because of you; and in its growth lays the growth of all of us. I call upon all of you to take pledge and rake in all your energies to ensure that LPU lists amongst top 200 Universities of the world, by 2020.” Celebrating the success of LPU’s alumni, Pro Chancellor Ms Rashmi Mittal shared about the illustrious presence of LPU’s ex-students in different walks of life.  Vice Chancellor Dr Ramesh Kanwar elaborated upon the requirement of more research and development oriented projects from faculty and students. Executive Dean Dr. Sanjay Modi apprised about latest moves to reinforce pedagogy and curriculum of the University, keeping in with requirements of global job market.

Minister for Agriculture, Pakistan, Led Nine-Member Delegation from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) to Lovely Professional University

Jalandhar, Dec 22: Lovely Professional University welcomed a nine–member delegation from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad Pakistan under the patronage of Pro Chancellor Mr Malik Ahmad Ali Aulakh, Minister of Agriculture, Pakistan. The delegation included Vice-Chancellor UAF Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan, top educationists and progressive farmers of Pakistan. The delegates met Chairman of Lovely Group Mr Ramesh Mittal, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal, Vice Chancellor Dr Ramesh Kanwar and Director General Er HR Singla.  The visitors underwent mutual discussions about the potentialities and scopes in the area of agriculture and veterinary sciences. The delegates also visited LPU campus and had admiration for Student Accommodations, Infrastructure, Libraries, Laboratories, Student Resource Center, Central Library, R & D Center and other areas.

Feeling delighted to visit LPU, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture, Cooperatives, Livestock & Dairy Development, Forest, Fisheries & Wildlife, Tourism & Resort Development (Pakistan), Mr Ahmad Ali Aulakh said: “ I am happy to be a part of this delegation which has reached LPU with message of developments in the field of agriculture education.  I am also much pleased to see the infrastructure developed, at LPU, for the betterment of the students. Insha'allah, we would like to see universities of both these prominent Asian countries, India and Pakistan, work together in harmony for the students’ growth.  Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan was also contented on having happy dialogue with key functionaries of LPU for possible collaborative pursuits.

Welcoming the delegation, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal said: “In spite of industrialization and other revolutionary developments, agriculture remains central to economies of both Pakistan and India, as it pertains to the basic needs of the entire populace. The right time now is to work on encouraging the faculty and students towards new avenues in the field of agriculture, hydrology and veterinary sciences.   In this context, we are immensely happy to receive the delegation from Ministry and top university of agriculture of Pakistan. We anticipate that this meet will bring out results of great dimensions not only between UAF and LPU but the two countries, India and Pakistan, as well.”

Other than Minister for Agriculture and Vice Chancellor, UAF, Pakistan,   the Pakistani Delegation included UAF team comprised of Prof (Retd) Dr Hafiz Abdul Qayyum, Prof Dr Rai Niaz Ahmad (Dean, Faculty of Agri Engineering & Technology), Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar( Dean, Faculty of Social Science) and Dr Khalid Mustafa(Director, Institute of Business Management). Prominent among others were Dr Muhammad Anjum Ali, Director General (Extension), Govt of Punjab (Pakistan), Ch Hamid Malhi, President, Heritage and Basmati Growers  and Mr Mushtaq Ahmed (Progressive Farmers). Illustrative, Higher Education Commission, Pakistan (HEC) has ranked UAF as top university in the agriculture/veterinary field.

LPU Commenced 4-Day Workshop Empowering School Teachers with Soft Skills, e-learning and Smart Teaching

Jalandhar: Shouldering social responsibility on being biggest resource container, Lovely Professional University has conceived & designed career counseling and guidance project- ‘Disha’.  In this regard, students, teachers, parents and society are guided under mutual discussions/interactions for further betterment in educational environment. On the same lines, this time, a four-day workshop to empower school teachers, from Punjab and nearby states, has commenced today at LPU campus, to last up to 22nd instant. The workshop will add more to the knowledge pool of near 120 teachers and principals from 40 schools on soft skills, e-learning and smart teaching. During this, there will be 12 technical sessions from the university experts, interactions with senior functionaries of LPU, Panel Discussion, feedbacks from the participating teachers and an open forum for discussion and activities.  During the Valedictory Ceremony ‘Titles & Certificates’ will be distributed to the participants. The teachers coming from distant places have been provided with suitable lodging and boarding.

The inaugural session began with the lighting of the lamp and welcoming address by LPU Pro-Chancellor Ms Rashmi Mittal: “We are happy to see teachers and Principals' whole-hearted support, under their enthusiastic participation in large number. In fact, this workshop towards project ‘Disha’ is a call to all educationists to strengthen students, parents and society through their updated educative imparting. Working on the slogan of “paying more than we are paid for”, this time, we have strived towards sharing challenges and innovations in School & Higher Education and bridging the both.  This is simply to share our resources to fill the gaps in the ways of School and University teachings. We aim to add more to the knowledge pool of the teachers so that they may prepare their respective school students as ready to receive higher education in an easy absorbing way.”

The first day of workshop proceeded ahead under technical sessions: “Meeting Challenges of Indian Education” by Executive Dean Dr Sanjay Modi (Faculty of Business and Applied Arts), “Role of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) in Educational Institutions” by Additional Dean (Info-Tech) Mr Rohit Dhand and “Managing Work Life” by Professor Dr. Rajesh Verma (LPU School of Business). The other technical sessions will be on“ Communication Skills”, “Improving Effectiveness of School Education” ,“e-Learning concepts and lab work”, “Managing Diverse Classrooms”, “Lab work on e-Learning Tools” etc.

Participating teachers, Prem Kumar Verma, Sudarshan Kumari, Kanchan Gupta, Alka Sharma, Sandeep Kumar seemed very happy on joining the workshop: “We are indeed fortunate enough on learning a lot from the subject experts of the world class university of India. This effort will really help the students and the society indirectly. As we will be adding much to our skills, the students will naturally learn the latest trends and technologies through our teachings to them. We want that such efforts should continue in future too. We are also very happy to see the arrangements made for our convenience towards Transport, Food & Stay.”

LPU Students’ Three Months Long Competitive Activities Under Celebration ‘Magnitude-2012’ Culminated Colorfully

Jalandhar: Lovely Youth Capital, an undertaking of Student Project Cell (Division of Student Affairs) at Lovely Professional University organized three months long programme MAGNITUDE-2012. This programme was organized in length and breadth so that students might be adjudged to the core.  For judgments in different categories of competitions, various parameters were laid down for selections of the best. The programme culminated in an inspiring and colorful valedictory ceremony, wherein more than 400 prizes and certificates were awarded to the winning participants and volunteer students.  Near 3500 students had enrolled themselves for competitions arranged in more than 70 students’ interest related activities. Amandeep Kaur Sandhu and Kunwar Vishwajeet, both from School of Business, got declared Ms and Mr Magnitude 2012: Youth of the Year 2012-2013. LPU Vice Chancellor Dr Ramesh Kanwar and Director General Er HR Singla crowned the winners. 

During overall personality talent hunt of the individual students, they were deeply examined under different rounds for the most distinguished title of Ms and Mr Magnitude 2012. These examinations were towards Personal Interview, Ramp Walk, Introduction with suitable tagline and achievements, Extempore Speech on current issues, Role Play, Group Discussion, Entertainment and Interview round.

Congratulating all the participating and organizing volunteer students, VC Dr Kanwar said: “I am elated to note that all the students participated exuberantly and whole heartedly for many scores of competitions. It is also heartening to further know that the volunteers are inclining to arrange three fold of the present competitive events next year, under guidance of their mentors. I wish grand success unto all of their endeavors for their personal growth and betterment.”

In fact, Magnitude 2012 declared  a long list of prize winning students, who participated  under head titles: Masterstroke-the Fine Arts festival, Armageddon-the Rock Festival, LAN Gaming Festival, Quiz, Singing  & Dance competitions, World Literacy Day, Hindi Diwas, Motivational organizations and above all selection of Ms and Mr Magnitude 2012:  LPU YOUTH (Face) OF THE YEAR. Some of the attractive competitons arranged were Call of Duty, Counter Strike, FIFA, NFS Most Wanted, Robot Dance,  Sportsvilla - the Sports Quiz, Rapster, Singing Idol 2012, Street Hustle- the hip hop dance,  Fashion Show - Youth Vibe 2012,  Greenathon - Let's go green, Let's make India Green,  Spell-Bee, Kavi Sammelan, Alpana, Decorator, Flicker-Catch the emotions (photography), Junkies,  My Mehndi, Nature/Wild Photography, Perception, Tattoo Making, Tell-a-tale, Thermocolus etc.

The joy of two of the prize winners, Mohammed Hassan Abuja and   international student Oluwaseyi Abimbola Abegunde knew no bounds: “We have got much inspiration and excitement by participating in the activities of our liking. This time we had ample choice to showcase our worth. The prizes we have received are tokens to further shape and encourage us to always put forward our 100% to keep on excelling in this world of competitions.

High-level Delegation from Royal Embassy Saudi Arabia and Its top Ranked Qassim University Paid two-day Visit to LPU

Jalandhar: A high-level delegation from the most influential country in the Arab World reached Lovely Professional University. His Excellency, Second Ambassador from Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, Dr Ali Mohammad Al Shehri led the delegation to LPU, on a two-day visit. The delegation was also consisted of Mr Hisham Mohammad Ajmal (Royal Embassy) and Dr Ali Al Ghonaim, Al Qassim University (representing Ministry of Higher Education of Saudi Arabia). The High-profiled delegates met LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal, Pro Chancellor Ms Rashmi Mittal, Vice-Chancellor Dr Ramesh Kanwar, Dy Director Aman Mittal and software support team of the University to have discussions on different topics and to seek related collaborative opportunities. The visitors also visited different departments, hostels, laboratories, central library and other areas of importance at the University. They also had broad interactions with the students, faculty and other members of staff and grasped glimpses of ideology and working of LPU.

During various points of mutual discussion in various rounds of meeting with LPU top functionaries, the topics taken were: Providing English Language Program to Saudi Arabian Students; empanelment of LPU with Ministry of Higher Education of Saudi Arabia; joint  study, student and faculty exchange Programs; development of joint vocational programs with vocational institutions in Saudi Arabia; hosting of Gulf Conference at LPU; software development for Saudi Arabian universities; and, about the recruitment & visit of professors from Saudi Arabia.

Welcoming the visitors, Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal said: “We feel that this endeavor is not only a matter of pride and honor for LPU but the Punjab State also.  The high-profiled visitors, from a commanding country in the Arab Region, have preferred and intended to go for progressive educational endeavors with LPU. On the lines of present discussions, we anticipate certain collaborative programs with Ministry of Education of Saudi Arabia very soon.” Mr Mittal further asserted: “LPU is an international university, working on internationally benchmarked curriculum and pedagogy.  We would like to develop joint cooperation programs with universities of Saudi Arabia. We can develop 2+2 program at undergraduate level and 1+1 program at Masters level, in our diverse strong areas of study programs e.g. Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Applications, Business, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy etc.  Under such possibilities students and faculty of both the countries will be benefitted with great learning and job opportunities.  We, indeed, have great admiration for this opportunity accorded by the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia.”  Mr Mittal also assured the visitors that LPU would stand steadfast in providing quality academics and rich cultural experience to the students of Saudi Arabia.

On this occasion, His Excellency Dr Ali Mohammad Al Shehri said: “We are sharing as well as expanding our educational programs world over for betterment of   students and faculty. We have, of course, preferred LPU in India. Here, we have no holdup in extending our collaborative efforts towards it. We have been much impressed by the world class Infrastructure, Laboratories, Libraries, Hostels and many thousands of students hailing from different countries and states of India. Meeting the higher authorities of the University and having interactions with the staff and students, we acknowledge that LPU has great potentialities in regard to students, faculty related educational and cultural exchange programs. We would like to work together in near future on great lines of our mutual discussions, to have long term relationship.” 

Illustrative, LPU already has great experience on joint programs with universities from USA, UK, Canada, and China.  This visit is going to include name of Saudi Arabia in this coveted list. The visitors were much impressed by enterprise resource planning (ERP) facility at LPU. ERP is business management software that allows an organization/university to use a system of integrated applications to manage the business. LPU will send proposal for various modules of this software which can be further utilized by the Saudi Arabian Universities.

Lovely Institute of Distance Education (LIDE) Organised Fashion Cum Musical Show ‘Dressed to Impress’

Jalandhar: Lovely Institute of Distance Education (LIDE) organised fashion cum musical show ‘Dressed to Impress’, at LPU Campus today. This event was the effort to showcase that the distance education students should also get equal opportunity to reveal their knowledge and talent. More than 120 latest and classic designs prepared by the students of the department were showcased. The fashion parade was designed under six Rounds, where more than 30 student-models walked on the ramp along with national models. The cold evening also witnessed a warm spectacular musical ramp show with exquisite performances.  ‘The Punjabi Princess of Cinema’ Britain born actress Mandy Takhar,  famous singers Madan Maddi, Surkhaab Maan (Kade taan Has Bol ve, ‘Tera Naa’  fame) & Music Director G Sonu  known for “Tu Sajjna” added glamour & luster to the show.  On this occasion, Chairman of the Lovely Group, Mr Ramesh Mittal, Vice- Chairman Mr Naresh Mittal, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal, Pro Chancellor Ms Rashmi Mittal, Vice Chancellor Dr Ramesh Kanwar, Director General Er HR Singla were also present.

Feeling elated on the organisation of a dazzling fashion parade by the distance education students, Mr Ashok Mittal said: "In this event, the distance education students have proved their capability which is no less than the regular students. This generation has indeed introduced itself to the fashion world, music and dance with an impressive festive show organization. Such a professional exposure will certainly add more confidence into them to enter the industry.” He also wished a very bright career to all the participating students!” 

Started with Sufiana Round, the other five rounds of the show were Indo Western, Innovative, Anarkali, Western and Office Wear. All displayed splendid creations by the students of Fashion Technology of LIDE.  The Innovative Round earned much applauds as the students revealed their creative power in it with use of casual material like leaves plates etc. In between the rounds students performed with great messages of social awakening. The singers sang popular numbers from their albums for the entertainment of the audience. The famous numbers remained Kade taan Has Bol ve, Tera Naa Tu Sajjna etc. One of these was against drug addiction which is related to the youth. Students also presented scintillating Bhangra and compelled the spectators to take bhangra steps along with them. 

Some of the participating students of the Fashion Technology Surpreet, Kiran, Rohit, Ranjit, Deepika said: "This participation has made us knowledgeable towards latest trends and traditions prevalent in Fashion Industry. We have indeed learnt much for our career. Now we hope to get chance to work with top brands like Monte Carlo, Tommy Hilfiger, Lilliput, Madame, Neva Inner Wear and such others of immense repute.”

National English Seminar at LPU Witnessed Participation of 22 Scholars from India’s top Educational Institutions

Jalandhar: In order to promote professional sharing and inform the latest developments in English Language teaching and learning, the Department of English at Lovely Professional University organised a national seminar. The topic was ‘Revising the Normative: Using Post-colonialism to Readdress Culture, Literature and Performance’. 22 research scholars, professors and lecturers from top institutes from across the states of West Bengal, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab and union Territories participated in the seminar. Even, valuable abstracts on the topic, to be read out during seminar, were received from countries like Iran.  Held as an open lecture, the seminar let the audience akin to the topic.

Scholars discussed various aspects of post-colonial literature and deliberated at length upon the theories/ concepts at the bottom of the subject. The addresses delivered by the invited speakers helped in creating the elevated literary atmosphere. Prof Dr Kumar Sankar Bhattacharya from Birla Institute of Technology & Sciences, Prof Anil Raina of Panjab University Chandigarh, Prof Gurupdesh of Guru Nanak Dev University were appreciated much for their thoughts and presentations. They illustrated the unique and contrasting perspectives of the colonial era and the struggling display of nationalism emerged during this time period.

Illustrative, Post-Colonialism pertains to a society moving away from another society’s cultural values, ethics, psychology etc to form an identity of their own. The literature commonly originated from countries colonized by European Powers.

Appreciating the research initiative of the English Department, LPU Vice Chancellor Dr Ramesh Kanwar encouraged all the participants: “Get engaged to the core in research projects to produce innovative ideas and share them with the world for benefit of others. The present endeavour of the English Department is indeed a step towards this."

LPU’s Department of Physical Education Organized Annual Intra Department Athletic Meet 2012

Jalandhar: Representing their Department of Physical Education, M PEd Final Year Students of Lovely Professional University organized annual Intra Department Athletic Meet 2012, at   Lovely Sports Complex Hardaspur. More than 500 men and women athletes from different Schools and Departments of the University participated in near15 competitions. Started with lighting of torch, flag hoisting, oath taking, the athletic meet was declared open by the Chief Guest, LPU Pro Chancellor Ms Rashmi Mittal, amid assembly of athletes & thousands of student-spectators.  Waving flags of their respective departments, the colourfully-cladded athletes presented a massive march past. This followed the start of different athletic competitions, with 800 Mts Race first of all.  More than 60 gold, silver and bronze medals were distributed to the winning athletes.

Addressing the athletes, Pro Chancellor Ms Mittal conveyed the great message to the participating athletes: “The most important thing is not to win but to take part in such activities!  In fact, the three priestly words of the Olympic slogan, observed in the meet, ‘Citius-Altius-Fortius’ meaning "Faster, Higher, Stronger" represent moral beauty and duty of every sports person. As such all the athletes should observe the spirit of the meet to the core to rise in the life as the best human beings.” Congratulating the final year M PEd students for organizing such a meet, Ms Mittal continued: “M PEd students were expected that they should organize such an event in a large way. We are happy to see that they have proved themselves up to our expectations by organizing such a huge ever event during study time period.”

The closing ceremony witnessed the honouring and prize distribution, before vote of thanks and declaration of closing of the Meet by LPU Vice Chancellor Dr Ramesh Kanwar. Gaganpreet Kaur, the University student who headed the oath taking ceremony and who also has much to her credit towards athletic achievements, said: “Our alma mater has made us more responsible by having a firm faith on us.  The teaching and understanding which we have received through our teachers at the university will always help us in our future professional life. This organization has indeed made us more confident.”

Cast of “Cigarette ki tarah” Visits LPU: Calls Upon Youth to Say no to Drug Abuse

Jalandhar, Dec 6, The lead cast of the upcoming movie “Cigarette ki tarah” which is based on ‘quit smoking message’ visited LPU Phagwara today along with other crew members; dispense the message of abstaining from drug and smoking culture, to the students.  The team reached LPU at 12:30 PM, and was welcomed by a cheering crowd of nearly 2,000 students; as Aman Mittal, LPU received them warmly.

Amongst those who visited included actors Bhoop Yaduvanshi and Madhurima Tuli. The movie which is going to hit the screens on 14th December, 2012 is about youth, their indulgences and the menace of drug abuse.  The movie highlights the plight of those who take to smoking and other related ills, and their unfavourable aftermaths on one’s life. The Director of the movie stated they have purposely chosen LPU as a venue, as the movie is all about young people; and the subject is closely related to the lives and life-styles adopted by many young people.” He further added that they want to leave the message in large that smoking/drugs are not a right way of living by youth.

After the initial welcome, the crew came out open in the lawns of the University and mingled with the students in a casual and unbridled amusing way. Thereafter, they got on to a podium and addressed the students from there highlighting the importance of healthy and drug-free life. The cast also danced to the tunes of popular numbers from the movie, sending the sea of applauding students in a wild gush of excitement.  Abhit, one of the students exalted to have an interaction with the lead acting pair stated, “I am very happy to see that every now and then, artists from various fields keep coming to LPU campus.  Earlier I used to see this as just a means to have fun and excitement. But it is a good feeling for me to see that there is a message by the visitors, in their every visit. It was good to see that the lead pair Bhoop Yaduvanshi and Madhurima Tuli talks about the ill effects of drug abuse; and the students lending a serious ear to their words.”

Ms Rashmi Mittal, Pro Chancellor LPU in his message regarding the event stated, “Celebrities have a great influence on the general public as a whole, and youth in particular. This visit by the entire crew of the movie is one of the endeavours of LPU to dispense meaningful messages to its students, by leveraging upon the celebrity status of those who visited the campus. Moreover, the subject of the movie i.e. drug abuse is of extreme relevance to today’s youth; and hence we are happy to see the crew coming to campus to drive awareness about the menace.”

Ceasefire Industries Ltd. Selects 28 from LPU–B.Tech (ECE) and MBA students chosen for pan Indian operations

Jalandhar: In a placement drive organized at LPU Phagwara for engineering and MBA students, Ceasefire Industries limited recruited a total of 28 students, who will serve as Management trainee, when they will join the company in the mid of next year. Ceasefire is a trusted name in fire safety and Security Company. The Mumbai based company has carved a niche for itself in firefighting safety business and is emerging as a frontrunner in the same.  21 students were placed from MBA (Marketing) discipline, whereas remaining seven were from B.Tech (Electronics & Communication Engineering).   The selection procedure consisted of group discussion, initial interview and final interview.

Congratulating the successful students, Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal stated, “There are seamless opportunities out there in the job market. Distinguished Physical Educationalists from University of New England, Australia, visited LPU

Jalandhar: Significant guest-lectures on ‘Contemporary Curriculum and Pedagogical approaches for Physical Education in Australia’ were, recently, held at LPU’s Department of Physical Education. The resource persons for the said purpose were Dr Judith Miller and Dr John Haynes from University of New England (UNE), Australia. Both, the visiting foreign faculty are renowned experts in the field of their research and publications. About 400 students of the Department got benefited through high-valued educative deliveries.

Both of the visitors are Senior Lecturers at Faculty of the Professions, School of Education of UNE and are members of the Health, Physical Education and Sports Studies team. Dr Judith Miller increased the knowledge of the LPU students for personal development, health and physical education pedagogy. She explained about her major research projects, which are focused on enhancing school-aged children’s health, through nutritional knowledge and behavior understanding. Whereas, Dr John Haynes let the students aware about Sensory motor mode of learning; Movement studies; Applied anatomy; Fundamental motor skills; and Teaching games for understanding.

On this visit of education specialists at the University, LPU’s Vice-Chancellor Dr Ramesh Kanwar said: “Our students have added much to their knowledge from the expertise of visiting UNE faculty, who have years of Research and Publication experience. Through this receiving the students will certainly get a boost to their career in the field of physical education and sports activities.” 

Feeling very happy on visiting LPU and delivering lectures, both of the visitors appreciated the educative environment and infrastructure at the University. Informing about UNE, they told: “UNE has a long tradition of serving the regions in Australia as well as the world. Department of Fine Arts of LPU showcased students’ enchanting creations at its 1st annual Art Exhibition ‘Creative Contour-2012’

Jalandhar: Department of Fine Arts at Lovely Professional University organised its four days first annual art exhibition ‘Creative Contour-2012’. This art exhibition showcased about 500 artworks, in different genre, created and designed by the university students . These creations were in different fields of the art forms, including charcoal drawings, sculpting, clay-modeling, mural painting, sketching, ceramic designs, metal craft, print/card/poster making, photography, typography, 3-D modeling, graphic designs, canvass paintings, paper -cutting pasting, pottery designing, have made it as the largest exhibition through department. After display at Department’s Gallery & Studios, these artistic creations will also be displayed at LPU Uni Mall-Students Resource center.

Appreciating the efforts of the faculty and the students, LPU Pro Chancellor Ms Rashmi Mittal said: “I am glad to note that through our initiative taken, the creative students have put in practice what they have learnt in classes. Presenting themselves as professional artists, students have displayed their own area of expertise under unique styles.” Appreciating, especially, the Mural painting, she applauded the work on the ceiling of one of the studios: “Working on the lines of the greatest artist of the world, Michelangelo, students have come out with innovative work, which has been appreciated by all. Looking at the amount of creativity in such works, we are devising to show these creations in the open market as well. This is inclined that this exhibition should be exhibited in cities like Chandigarh, Delhi & Mumbai.”

Some of the artist-students of the University, Harinder Kaur, Shashi Kant, Raj Kumar, Renuka, Tashi, Ugyen, Harpreet Kaur, who devoted themselves for painting art on ceiling, felt very happy on getting appreciation: “We toiled very much to get ceiling designed as we wanted. For this, sometimes we worked hours together forgetting all about our meals and rest hours. We are also thankful to the faculty who guided us how to create art on the ceiling, with the needed raised platforms.”

Jalandhar: The highest level of academic Event in North India, AIU’s North Zone Vice Chancellors’(VCs) Annual Conference started, today, at LPU Campus. In the conference, 36 Vice Chancellors of AIU’s Member Universities of seven Indian states and union territories discussed to strategize reformation in Indian Higher Education. It is for the first time that the conference of such a stature happened in Doaba Region. Stretching to two days for four technical sessions, on the first day important issues related to present education scenario like ‘In-breeding issues in academia’ and ‘Shortage of Quality Faculty at Indian Universities & how to overcome this problem’ were discussed in elaboration. Two other sessions of ‘Academia- industry Interface’ & ‘Globalization’ will be followed up the next day. The conference commenced with the welcome of AIU President Prof SN Puri and other delegates by LPU Pro Chancellor Ms Rashmi Mittal.

While discussing for the success of universities, in relation to the issue of shortage of quality faculty, VCs wanted to prepare PhD students for future faculty jobs. On these lines, they wanted to have some of the best and brightest students to be attracted to PhD programs by offering good fellowships per month. In addition, it was also held that an encouraging environment and good policies should be created for faculty to do PhD part-time. VCs maintained that without quality faculty, quality teaching and research programmes imparting quality education will be the biggest challenge. VCs also discussed about mutual collaborations between universities to facilitate joint research, faculty development programs, joint conferences, workshops and joint research project proposals.

Addressing the assemblage of intellectuals, President AIU, Prof Puri touched and highlighted all the topics like quality education, faculty, funding, society, employability, academics, foreign education and sports. He held: “The great matter of concern in present education scenario is that good faculty is shying away from this profession.” For funding he laid stress that state governments should come forward for maintenance of infrastructure of Universities. Speaking about the choice of study programmes, he opined: “In India, more than 60% population is associated with agriculture or related profession. However, only 0.01% of all graduating students get degrees related to agriculture.” Following concrete data, he wanted that 200 more universities are needed to impart education to aspiring students for preferred vocational programmes. Having appreciation for all the participating VCs and Directors, he exhorted all of them: “Let our contemplation together maintain spirit of credibility of the Association.”

Thanking one and all present for the conference, LPU VC, Dr Ramesh Kanwar hoped to come out with key findings for the ushering problems in the education scenario. He also assured that following the solutions sought at the conference and with the co-operation of AIU member universities: “LPU would leave no stone unturned to be among top 200 universities of the world.” He specially thanked the President AIU for entrusting LPU to host such a magnanimous organization.

North Zone Vice Chancellors resolved at LPU to work together to make Northern India hub of Higher Education

Jalandhar: On the valedictory day of AIU’s North Zone Vice chancellors Meet at Lovely Professional University, all the Vice Chancellors, Directors & Delegates, resolved to work together to make Northern India a hub of Higher Education. Making many other related resolutions, they got strong-minded to shape maximum of zonal universities to have coveted place among top 200 universities of the world. Commencing the second & final day of the conference with third technical session for Academia Industry Interface, VCs shared their thoughts unanimously to have more and more engagement of educational institutes with industries. They held that it is strongly needed so that renowned companies might visit and interact with the students to let them become globally competent professionals. VCs also discussed about the key role of industry in curricula development, consultancy and research. In the last and the fourth session detailed discussion was held among VCs for globalization of education.

Speaking on the conclusive day, Prof R Krishnakumar, AIU Secretary General & VC of Yashwant Rao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, Nasik, maintained: “It is imperative that universities would have to work with industry more closely to fulfill responsibility of producing right human resource for country.” He also mentioned: “If some major steps are taken right now, by 2020 we would be able to realize to make India as one of the most prominent contributor to the global man-power across the globe. This will certainly help universities to strive to get included in the top list of 200 universities of the world.”

Bidding adieu to the top educationists of AIU member universities, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal said: “This annual conference had mind-catching significance as the Vice Chancellors who participated in the deliberation are the distinguished leaders of the Indian higher education and at prominent position to bring change. I am sure, meaningful dialogues and deliberations among the galaxy of intellectuals carve out a niche to bring substantial reform in the arena of Higher Education.”

While discussing about Academia Industry Interface, Prof Satish Chandra Jain, Vice Chancellor Mangalayatan University Aligarh, held: “The pressing need of the hour is to re-design curriculum. 50 % of the course ought to be in relation to Industry requirements.” LPU Vice-Chancellor, Dr Ramesh Kanwar suggested: “Curriculum should be devised in such a way that it should shape students to be ever industry ready.”

The two-day conference of AIUs North Zone VCs was organized at LPU on 23 -24 Nov 2012, which provided a platform to Vice-Chancellors to discuss significant issues of higher education and problems being faced by them. The conference was attended by 36 VCs belonging to the varsities located in the zone. LPU was specially chosen for this conference, looking at the fast growth of the university, which has been regularly scaling on international parameters requisite in the realms of education.

Illustrative, Prof Abdus Sattar Mohammad, Vice Chancellor North South University Dhaka (Bangla Desh) and Dr Suresh Kumar from IOWA State University, US also participated in the ‘Meet’. Apart from Indian universities, six foreign varsities, including Kathmandu University, Nepal; Royal University of Bhutan, Thimpu; Middle East University, UAE; Open University Malayasia, Malaysia; University of Technology, Mauritius and the Mauritius University are also the associate members of the AIU.

LPU hosting AIU’s North Zone Vice-Chancellors Annual Meet for two-days from November 23

Jalandhar: In order to discuss critical issues affecting the higher education in India, Association of Indian Universities’ North Zone Vice Chancellors annual Meet would be held at LPU for two days, from November 23, 2012. Near 40 Vice- Chancellors, from the Universities of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, UT Chandigarh, New Delhi and Punjab, have consented so far to participate. Some of the important issues have been identified for discussion in the Meet, under a broader theme, like ‘Shortage of quality faculty at Indian Universities & how to overcome this’; ‘Inter-University collaboration/partnerships for mutual success’; and, ‘Academia-Industry Interface’. These issues will be discussed to come out with possible solutions using the collective wisdom of all the Vice Chancellors of the Zone.

The Meet will be inaugurated by the Chief Guest Prof S N Puri, President AIU and Vice Chancellor of Central Agricultural University Imphal, Manipur. The Guest of Honour of the day will be LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal. Chief Guest for the valedictory Session will be AIU’s Secretary General Dr. R Krishnakumar, Vice Chancellor, Yashwantrao Chavan Maharastra Open University, Nashik. Prof Mohammad Abdus Sattar, Vice Chancellor North South University Dhaka (Bangladesh), will also address the intellectual assembly on significant role of AIU in Higher Education.

In this regard Press Conference was held where LPU Chancellor Mr. Ashok Mittal, Vice Chancellor Dr. Ramesh Kanwar and AIU President Dr. S N Puri were present. Talking to media, LPU Chancellor Ashok Mittal said: “This Meet has remarkable implication as the Vice Chancellors who are expected to participate in the deliberation are the renowned leaders of higher education in India. Now-a-days, education is to be designed in such a way that ultimately it proves to be a forerunner of social and economic transformation of the society. Knowledge capital has become the major shipper of the society. As such, meetings of the think-tanks, like this, are of utmost importance.
Dr. Ramesh Kanwar, VC LPU stated- through these meets knowledge base is regularly strengthened by having updated & excellent education system.

Through this ‘Conference’, we anticipate to come out with solid resolutions containing measures to be adopted by different stakeholders, namely Government, Chancellors, Vice Chancellors and other university functionaries.” Dr. S N Puri, President AIU mentioned that AIU has hold of 441 Government & Private Universities as its members. This annual event is at the core of the objective of AIU which is to bring reform in higher education.

AIU has been working as a coordinating body to protect the interest of the students and universities. One of the annual features of AIU is to organize Vice Chancellors' Zonal and National Meets. Such a meet is an important event in the AIU Calendar, which provides important platform to discuss the significant issues of higher education and the problems faced. Last years’ meetings have brought solutions to many problems. This year, too, much fruitful is expected to come out for the field of education. Moreover, these meetings also play accelerating role in letting the voice of intelligentsia heard before government and other national and international stakeholders of higher education.

LPU honoured with Government of India’s “e-India Best Open & Distance Learning Initiative of the year- 2012 Award”

Jalandhar: LPU e-Connect the online Learning Management System of Distance Education- has recently bagged e-India 2012 Award in the category of Best Open & Distance Learning Initiative of the year 2012. The honour was bestowed upon LPU by Sri Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Hon’ble Minister for IT & Communications, Government of Andhra Pradesh (AP). The occasion was ‘e-India 2012 - the 8th edition of India’s largest and most prestigious ICT event, hosted by A P Government, at Hyderabad.

LPU hosted three-day Punjab School Education Board's Regional Competitions for Co-Curricular & Cultural Events

*Rural students excelled their urban competitors in exhibiting & absorption of great culture of Punjab & India


Jalandhar:  LPU successfully hosted Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Jalandhar Region’s   three-day competitions for cultural & co-curricular events, at its campus. Stretched from 6th November, 2012, these 15 competitive events concluded today.  More than 2000 students from 200 schools participated. On the first day 350 students, on second 800 and on third day 850 students competed for different competitions.  To fulfill strenuous task of such a mammoth conduction, it is third time in continuation that LPU has been entrusted by the State Education Board of the Government of Punjab.  In this regard, the Division of Student Affairs of the university cared for the whole organization.


Held annually at Block, District, Regional and State Level in chronological order; these co-curricular activities have due Academic Weight-age for the participants. As such, these competitions help the participants in having Reservation of Seats for all Academic and Professional Courses at University as well as School Level, as per their talent potentialities. The winners of Jalandhar Region will now compete at the state level.  


Praising the efforts & structure of events by PSEB, LPU’s Pro Chancellor Ms Rashmi Mittal expressed her happiness on hosting of competitions by LPU: “This time we have made hat-trick in maintaining mutual trust with PSEB by accommodating the young minds for their extraordinary talents, at LPU Campus.  Through this annual activity, it is evident that PSEB has made conscious effort for all round personality development of the young students of the state. LPU always wants to share such social works and responsibilities, which uphold Indian/regional traditions, customs, values and culture in abundance.” Congratulating the winners and other participants, she further added: "We are pleased to see the successful conclusion of competitions, where students revealed talents in a befitting manner. Participating students should learn that competitions teach to put forward one’s hundred percent, irrespective of victory or defeat.”


On contacting school teachers Ms Paramjit Kaur from Dashmesh Sr Sec School Ludhiana &, Ms Ramandeep Kaur Govt Girls High School Hathur (Jagraon), who accompanied participating students, they held: "It is really great that students of primary and middle class level have performed on the University stage. Performing in such an ambience also makes the students aspire to work harder and go for higher education." Also, some of the first position winner-students Lovepreet (Folk Song), Rupinder(Solo Dance) & Samarjeet Singh(Painting) said that they were indeed lucky to perform before the audience and spectators of the largest University of India: “We have been inspired to do much better next."

Three –Day Annual Intra University Student Carnival ‘ICARUS 2012’ concluded at LPU

Jalandhar:  Following former President of India Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam’s holding “What you imagine is what will transpire…. What you believe is what you will achieve”; Student Organization Cell of LPU organized a three- day event ‘ICARUS 2012-Wings of Imagination’.  This organization, which was held as an Annual Intra University Student Carnival, saw an amalgamation of 55 exhibitions, workshops, events, potpourri and celebrations. These events designed and derived from the realms of science, technology, sports, cultural and management entertained and added to the knowledge of the onlooker-students.

Awarding the students during valedictory ceremony of ICARUS 2012, Director General of LPU Er HR Singla congratulated each and every participant. Addressing, he said: “We are immensely happy to note the creativity and productivity of the students.  We hope that students will continue learning the basic principles and latest methodologies in different areas to excel others.   The projects and allied workings which have been revealed here will further help students to understand the importance of all Dos and Don’ts, in their areas of learning. LPU will continuously strive to inculcate skills of Creativity, Innovations and leadership among its students, through relevantly needed criteria. 
Some of the participating students said that ICARUS-2012 has taught us a lot: “We kept pondering, creating, innovating and, even, having fun while participating in the events and seeing the efforts of the fellow students. In fact, we immersed ourselves into the ocean of extravaganza under the guidance and motivation of faculty to display and exhibit our projects."

Illustrative, for exhibitions there were Electric Car, many Student Initiated Projects, Painting and Comic-Con Celebration. Sports entertainment were for Table-Tennis, Basket Ball, Fun & Masala Cricket, Street Football, Lan Gaming, Badminton, Chess and Green Marathon.  Events like Ad making Competition, Da-Vinci-Scavenger, Spell Bee LPU 'Dyktando', Brainic Quiz Competition, Code Master LPU, Ludificator were from Department of Management. Whereas,  in the fields of science and technology, there were arrangements for Aqua Robot Competition, Maze follower, Cantilever Bridge, Water rocket, Automobile, Image Processing, Chromatography, Web Designing,  immunology & Electro-tech Workshops. For Night events there were the best arrangements for Night Sky Watch watching, Sky Lantern Ceremony, Animated Movie Screening.  These were added with attractive Robo-wars, Junkyard Genius, Spread Streak &Tweak events.

LPU’s School of Hospitality celebrated International level Culinary Festival ‘Flavours 2012’

 *Competition to judge Hotel Management students about their preparedness for the hotel industry

*Would-be-chefs (Students) from top educational Institutions and universities of North India participated in the event

Jalandhar: India is well-known worldwide for its splendid foods, flavours and festivals. Maintaining the same, LPU’s School of Hospitality celebrated its annual Culinary Festival “Flavours 2012”, today, to promote “Chef Profession” among young students. The celebration saw the best combo of amazing food, innovative national/international ‘carte du jour’(dishes) and unbelievable group of talented would-be-chefs from competing 20 educational Institutions and universities. During the fest, the budding professional-students were provided a big platform to showcase their culinary skills, which would further motivate them to build strong foundations in Hospitality Industry. For this, a number of competitions like Healthy Breakfast Dish, Innovative Soup with accompaniment, Novel Menu, Creative Dessert and Culinary Quiz were held. Following international rules, the competing students were judged for accuracy of recipe, presentation/balance, taste, technique/skill, creativity, hygiene & use of indigenous ingredients.     

Congratulating all the winners and other participating students, Director General of LPU Er HR Singla said: “It is heartening to note that Indian hospitality industry is growing exponentially and is predicted to grow 17 percent up to 2014, thereby adding millions of new jobs to the present work force.  Moreover in relation to the same, India will be a tourism hot-spot up to 2018, having the highest growth potential.  So a career in hospitality is sure to open up opportunities to earn a very good living with great income.” He further informed: “Through this competition, the endeavour of our School of Hospitality is to impart knowledge, skills, concepts and techniques to the students to learn and emerge as global hospitality service providers.” 

Some of the participants Harsh & Jyotsana said: “We know that the competitive celebrations like this are sure to develop and promote the related culinary skills in us towards flourishing food & beverage industry.  We have learnt so many innovative styles of food preparation and presentation skills, viable in terms of food-cost and nutrition, from our rivals also. This fest has really strengthened our individual creativity by furnishing us a big platform to portray skills, techniques and styles.” 

In fact, hospitality industry is a vibrant and glamorous field by offering more dynamic work environment than other professions. If one considers the level of accommodation that companies provide for top managers, or even the day-to-day perks that hotel and restaurant managers get for free, one finds that the salaries are very competitive with other industries.

Rwanda's Ambassador paid a special visit to Lovely Professional University (LPU)

“You are lucky to study at LPU in a great country India”: His Excellency Mr Williams Nkurunziza told to students from Rwanda 

* Rwandan Students assured His Excellency Mr Williams Nkurunziza: “We will prove ourselves to be models of integrity.” 


Jalandhar: On special visit to the Indian states of Punjab and Haryana, Rwanda’s Ambassador His Excellency Mr Williams Nkurunziza visited Lovely Professional University, today.   On reaching LPU, His Excellency Mr Williams Nkurunziza, who was accompanied by 2nd Counsellor Mr Mucyo Rutishisha, was warmly welcomed by LPU Vice Chancellor Dr Ramesh Kanwar, for valuable discourse.  As part of the visit, His Excellency Mr Williams Nkurunziza met more than 200 Rwandan students, who are getting education at LPU under different study programmes like Computer Applications/Information Technology, Computer Science, Business, Economics, and Pharmacy etc.  The Ambassador also enjoyed the opportunity to visit the 9 storey Central Library, Student Resource Centre, hostels and laboratories of the university. 


His Excellency Mr Williams Nkurunziza was highly impressed with the facilities & education support being provided to the students of his country. He got emotional when students presented their National Anthem-“Rwanda Nziza Gihugu Cyacu, Wuje imisozi, lbiyaga n’ lbirunga”, which means “Beautiful Rwanda, our country; adorned of hills, lakes and volcanoes”. During interaction with students, he heard them keenly and was very happy to note the oneness of the students with the culture of India and the Punjab State: “India is a great country and you are lucky to receive education in a country which is going to be number one economy of the world. I want you to absorb the greatness of India’s culture, civilization and the working pattern which have made it the best place in the world. Moreover, LPU where you are getting world class education is indeed a university with difference working strenuously to provide top-notch education. I encourage you to learn, in addition to your studies, how people in India and Punjab are working to have great stories of success.”


On this occasion, Nshutiyimana Abraham Braddock, a BBA student made presentation of Rwandan students’ commitment titled ‘RWANDAN COMMUNITY IN LPU: VISION AND DETERMINATION’. He laid stress that student community has a big scope of thinking for their country, continent as well as the world as a whole.  BCA student, Kubwimana Thomas, Nkunzimama Christophe of MBA Tourism & Hospitality and others thanked LPU for opportunity to have special interaction session with His Excellency Mr Williams Nkurunziza. On behalf of the students they informed the Hon’ble visitor: “We are learning in a great educational system of LPU by getting professional studies as we want.”

Famous Bollywood Stars Kunal Kapoor & Huma Qureshi entertained LPU Students

Jalandhar: Upholding the festive fervour these days, Bollywood Stars of upcoming Hindi movie ‘Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana’ entertained LPU Students, today. Publicized to be Bollywood's first ‘food film’, the visiting stars of it - Kunal Kapoor and Huma Qureshi shared many of the  famous dialogues and scintillating  songs of this luscious comedy film. The stars danced, acted, sang and let thousands of LPU students enjoy each and every antic of theirs.  Even the foreign students from 30 countries were seen swaying, in their own style, on film’s experimental and amusing Punjabi music, based on modern sounds, elements of rap mingled with tunes of flute, dhol, rabab etc.  The film is going to hit theatres on 2nd November 2012. 

For this organization, LPU Pro Chancellor Ms Rashmi Mittal held: "Off and on, we want to have such activities for our students, who otherwise regularly undergo their international level hard study- programmes. Such organizations bring not only purgation of emotions but also a lot of things for students, like new experience, entertainment, awareness and also evoke inspiring messages in them.”


In an exclusive interview with LPU team, the visiting star Huma Qureshi, of 'Gangs of Wasseypur' fame, equated her roles with tests as students undergo: "For me, each role is like a test... as you have tests in your classes... that's how I approach my characters.”  Inspiring the young students to do big in life, Kunal Kapoor advised: “I don't think there is any better time to take risks than now. If you are not taking risks then you end up doing boring work. So, always step ahead to achieve big.” Worth mentioning, Kunal has been only a part of big-bannered movies-Rang De Basanti and Don-2.
